A Witch’s Journey by Tena Stetler

Does anybody know where I can find a werewolf specimen of my own to be the perfect boyfriend? I mean, seriously they are in the best of shape, have alpha tendencies, not to mention amazing stamina. Although, they may also have the tendency to smell like a dog, so…yeah maybe not 100% perfect.

What’s it About?

Pepper McKay comes from a long line of powerful witches. Unfortunately, magic brings her nothing but trouble. She learned the love of wildlife rescue and rehab from her Aunt Ashling. After graduating from college, Pepper works for Salem Wildlife Sanctuary and lives from paycheck to paycheck until she inherits the McKay property in Lobster Cove. With the family land and resources, she dares to dream of starting her own wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center.

Lathen Quartz, a former Navy SEAL turned handyman maintains the enchanted McKay property for the McKay estate. But someone is trying to steal the McKay magic. Lathen offers to help Pepper achieve her life-long dream of building a wildlife center. During the long hours spent together on the project, their mutual attraction can’t be denied. But each harbors a deep, dark secret. Will they overcome their demons and give love a chance?

First Impressions

The characters in this book are extremely lovable. The plot manages to hold your interest. But in my opinion, the hands-down best aspect of this novel, as with most things in life, is location, location, location.

MaineCoastlineFrom the quiet seaside town of Lobster Cove, to the vast and beautiful expanse of Denali National Park in Alaska, the author manages to transport you to the seemingly unreal landscapes of America’s coasts. I’ve said before how the scenery of a novel can oftentimes become a character in it’s own right, and this statement definitely holds true in A Witch’s Journey.

A Little Drama

As for the dramatic aspect of this novel, it sure does start off on a high note as Pepper tries to adjust to being the outsider in a new town. From Lathen’s spurned love interests, to the rumblings of dark magic, Pepper doesn’t necessarily have the warmest of welcomes to Lobster Cove. I will say the intensity of the plot sort of fizzles towards the middle, as more attention is placed on establishing Pepper’s wildlife rehab center and her blossoming romance with Lathen.

Things do come together in the end for what one character even refers to as a rather “unclimactic” conclusion. I think this is a theme which runs true for other aspects of the novel as well in that things are, in a way, almost too easy for our characters. I think I would have liked a bit more tension over the fact that Pepper and Lathen were coming together from vastly different magical backgrounds. She’s a witch; he’s a werewolf. And yet, both families are extremely accepting of their relationship. I guess that’s just the modern world we live in!

Series: Lobster Cove, book 1.

Should you read it? Just make sure you’ve saved up enough airline miles for either a trip to Maine or Alaska before starting this one! You’ll definitely get the urge to travel. I think the story could have been condensed a bit more to keep more of a flow to the drama, but a fun read overall with lovable characters.

Smut Level: Oh to get a werewolf alone and naked in a hot tub. Isn’t that the dream?

  1. Great review as usual! I was all gung-ho to read it, until you said it fizzled in the middle. May still pick up a copy, as I love the this genre. Thanks for your honest review.
