Bait N’ Witch by Abigail Owen

Another great addition to the Legendary Consultants series by Abigail Owen!

What’s it About?

In love with the witch hunter father of her charges…Rowan McAuliffe has been hiding most of her life. Secretly trained in her powers by an unusual source, she’d been taught not to trust anyone. Especially other witches. However, after she was forced to perform a hateful act against her will, she now hides from the Mage High Council who seek answers, and possibly her life.

Greyson Masters is the Council’s best enforcer–a witch hunter who lays down the law. Despite the danger of his job, Greyson is also raising his triplet daughters. Alone. Budding new witches who display an alarming combined power no one understands. Too bad he hasn’t got a clue how to deal with them.

Little does Greyson realize that the new nanny sent to him by Legendary Consultants is the very witch he is hunting. When the truth is revealed, can these two opposing forces find a way to listen to their hearts? Or will Greyson have to follow orders and kill Rowan–the one woman who has made his soul come alive?

First Impressions

When this novel first started, I couldn’t help but feel like it was the Sound of Music meets Harry Potter. And honestly, you can’t really go wrong with that combination! I mean, you’ve got the delightful nanny who comes to help look after the sometimes rambunctious children. There might not be seven of them, but when you’re dealing with three teenage triplet witches, it’s a pretty close comparison.

Then you have the strict father who is all about following the rules, yet still has an obvious love for his children, and a growing desire for the nanny who is having such a positive impact on all of their lives. There might not be any singing or Nazis in this book, but you’ve got  witches, werewolves, a Mage High Council, and plenty of sexual tension that is just bursting at the seams! And I’m talking about the seams of Grey’s pants of course.

Nymphs, Werewolves and Witches, Oh My!

What I love about this series is that although there is a continuing story line throughout each of the three novels, we are offered a different perspective of the events which have transpired based on the characters who are being featured as the leads in any given book. An added bonus is the fact that each novel deals with a new kind of paranormal couple.

In the first book you had a nymph and a demi-god, in book two you had a pair of alpha werewolves, and in this one you have some very talented witches with an unbreakable bond between them. You still see a reference to the characters and events from the previous novels, yet by constantly switching up the “species”, as it were, it’s basically a guarantee to never get bored!

Living with a Witch Hunter

A large portion of this novel deals with Rowan trying to hide her true identity from Grey, as he is actually a witch hunter who has been tasked with hunting her down. This complication definitely adds to the building sexual tension between them, as every time they get too close Rowan has to pull away, or risk discovery.

The one thing I would have liked more information on was the evil werewolf forces chasing after Rowan. This feature was brought in rather quickly towards the end of the novel, and I felt like we really didn’t get to understand who this werewolf was, or why she was dead set on getting revenge against Rowan. Yes, technically the motive was mentioned, but I think a few more scenes involving this enemy would have added to a deeper understanding of the story.

Series: Legendary Consultants, book 3. Can’t wait to see what comes next!

Should you read it? Another great read in this paranormal romance series. I think the enemy werewolf could have been introduced a bit earlier on in the story, but once again we have some amazing characters that you can’t help but root for to overcome the forces of evil and find a happily ever after.

Smut Level: Witch sex is the best. Nothing like casting a little protection spell between lovers to ensure a condom isn’t necessary. Freakin’ brilliant.

Sarai’s Fortune by Abigail Owen

Alright all you paranormal romance fans out there! I will let you have your werewolves, vampires, zombies, demons and pretty much anything else if you’ll just let me keep this polar bear shifter. Please! It just seems like he’d be so gloriously fluffy!!

What’s it About?

Zac Montclair’s first priority is to protect his people. With the escalating war between factions of shifters over land and resources, he has agreed to an alliance between his polar bears and the Shadowcat Nation of cougar shifters. But the treaty comes with a condition…he must accept one of their Seers into his Timik and put her under his personal protection.

Sarai Bouchard doesn’t need her supernatural gift to know that Kyle Carstairs’s obsession with controlling her ability will eventually result in her misery and demise. Her power is essential to her people’s survival, so when Kyle goes rogue, she’s sent to Zac Montclair to keep her safe. However, her visions reveal that while staying will lead to their becoming lovers, it also leads to his death. Leaving Zac will result in her own. If Sarai can’t find a way to change the future, she will be forced to choose…save her lover or save herself.

First Impressions

When it comes to Sarai, this poor girl has got to be experiencing one of the worst cases of “look, but don’t touch” that I’ve ever seen. There is an obvious pull and connection between her and Zac, and she’s foreseen how hot and heavy they can be in bed together, what with all the thrusting, heaving and sweating going on. Unfortunately, she’s also seen that getting involved with the man will undoubtedly lead to one of their deaths. Oh, and did I mention that he has sworn to protect her by welcoming her into his Timik, and insists on being close to her whenever possible? Gotta love the close proximity here!

Memory Lane

A Little Bit Closer Now

When we were first introduced to Zac Montclair in book one, we were offered just a brief glimpse of the dark and brooding polar bear shifter. In this novel, we get a first-hand account of what makes him tick, and it just so happens to be his undeniable attraction to the mysterious seer who has come under his protection.

The best scenes of the novel in my opinion were those which brought Sarai and Zac into closer contact, specifically when he was teaching her how to spar with an opponent. Nothing like a little physical contact and rolling around on a gym mat to get you in the mood! But beyond that, we see how committed Zac was to looking out for Sarai and keeping her safe. In his ideal world, he would always be there to fight her battles for her, but he realizes her strength and the need to protect herself should the opportunity arise. I just love that he didn’t treat her like a helpless withering wall flower!

Melding of Stories

Something I really appreciated about this sequel was that it did incorporate part of the story line and some of the characters from the first novel, yet for the most part the story did stand apart by focusing more attention on how Zac and Sarai were specifically affected be previous events. This helped the book come across as both unique, but still obviously part of the same world as book one. In addition, we are introduced to a few intriguing new characters who will undoubtedly be featured as the leads in a future book. I simply can’t wait!

*A copy of this book was provided for an honest review*

Series: Shadowcat Nation, book 2. Gimme more, gimme more!

Should you read it? This sequel provided great development of the original story! We see a continuation of the struggle from the previous novel, yet also the introduction of some new plot twists and future potential issues. My only complaint is that I wish Zac and Sarai had shifted more often. Each one only does a brief shift, and I really would have loved at least one scene of them running together in their polar bear and cougar forms. Other than that? Fabulous!

Smut Level: My favorite part of this book? Zac may be the one to surprise Sarai with a few kisses here and there, but she’s the one to take full initiative by showing up in his bed one night totally naked!

A Witch’s Holiday Wedding by Tena Stetler

And you thought planning your wedding was stressful! Imagine having to accommodate your fiancé‘s werewolf pack members, your own witchy parents, and a gathering of ghostly relatives. And on top of all that, running a wildlife sanctuary for injured animals. I’m starting to understand the immediate need for honeymoons!

What’s it About?

Elemental witch, Pepper McKay and former Navy SEAL, Lathen Quartz have built Lobster Cove Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center on enchanted McKay land. During a romantic interlude on Halloween night, Pepper happily agrees to become Lathen’s wife. What better day than Winter Solstice for their wedding in a town that loves celebrations and Christmas. However, planning a wedding and operating their wildlife center takes a toll on both Pepper and Lathen.

When the couple takes a much-needed break for Thanksgiving with family in Colorado, a Maine snowstorm fills the center with injured wildlife. Lathen finds himself drawn into a covert military mission, while trying to deal with issues with friends and family. Pepper wants to cancel the wedding. Is she having second thoughts? Will the nosy McKay ghosts, Lathen’s werewolf pack, Pepper’s parents, and her best friend help or hinder the wedding and holiday plans?

First Impressions

This novel is a sweet continuation of A Witch’s Journey, as we get to tag along as Pepper and Lathen put the finishing touches on their wedding plans. The entire novel spans pretty much the whole holiday season, from a family Thanksgiving celebration, to a Christmas wedding, to ringing in the New Year with loved ones. It’s a cute read that demonstrates the importance of family, including the new one you might be marrying into. And every time you get frustrated with family trying to plan the whole blessed event themselves, just take a relaxing dip in the hot tub with your sexy werewolf fiancé. He’s sure to keep you extra warm!

Smooth Sailing

Although this novel was a cute read, and there was a lot of wedding planning/celebrating going on, I did feel like the majority of the plot was lacking any real struggle. There were moments where some issues could have been expanded upon to create some real drama, but they were all resolved very quickly and without any major problems. Throughout the book I kept expecting there to be some kind of eventual twist or complication, but it was pretty much smooth sailing.

For example, at one point Lathen’s former SEAL buddies come to recruit him for a secret mission. I thought there might actually be some danger involved, but alas, the mission took one day and just required his computer skills. Little fuss. Who knows if this could possibly be featured again in a future novel, but when it comes to this book the focus is primarily on the holidays and family.

Series: Lobster Cove, book 2.

Should you read it? I think some kind of drama would have made the book slightly more engaging. Even the stresses of wedding planning were resolved with very little cause for worry. Almost too smooth of a read at times. But my goodness is Lathen extra yummy!

Smut Level: Overall pretty clean, especially considering family is in the next room, but in some scenes Lathen’s animal side is let out to play. Tee hee!

Andromeda’s Fall by Abigail Owen

YAASSSS! Another addictively gripping series from Abigail Owen that will suck you in and leave you wanting even more!

What’s it About?

Andromeda Reynolds is being hunted. After witnessing her mother’s violent death at the hands of a pack of wolf shifters, Andie has devoted her life to protecting her community of cougar shifters from a similar fate. But now, a greater threat lies within her own pack, and she must run. If she stays, Kyle Carstairs will force their mating, seeking the added political power their union would provide.

Andie would rather chew off her own foot than end up with Kyle. Though, knowing him, she won’t live long either way. Andie’s only hope of survival is to mate Jaxon Keller, the Alpha of the Keller Dare with which she is seeking asylum. But before she can get to him, Andie must first go through A.J., one of the Alpha’s Protectors. What Andie doesn’t realize is that A.J. has secrets of his own. All Andie knows is that the incredibly frustrating shifter insists on challenging her story, her skills, her trust… and her heart.

First Impressions

I think I could tell from about page 2 that I was going to love this book. The story line kicks off right away with a break-in and a fabulous burst of sexual tension. Sure enough, I couldn’t put this one down, and finished it pretty much in one sitting during a flight from DC to Phoenix. Abigail Owen manages to draw you into her unique world of shifters, bitter rivalries and delightful romance with a sexy male and empowering female lead.

Ultimate Strength

Abigail Owen never fails to present us with a courageously strong female lead in her novels, and this one definitely knows how to pack a punch. She may be on the run from the leaders of her dare, or cougar pack, but she knows how to survive. She seeks out the leader of another dare, and unbeknownst to her, she meets him upon first entering his compound.

Jaxon has his reasons for keeping his true identity as alpha of the Keller dare a secret from the bewitching female who literally rolled her way into his compound. However, as they spend more time together he can’t deny the attraction they both feel for one another which extends beyond lust. He’s finally met someone who can hold her own seemingly against anyone, even a powerful cougar alpha such as himself, and he quickly finds himself to be quite the smitten kitten.

A Little More Please

There were two different aspects of this book where I would have liked just a smidge more substance than what was presented to us. Very minor though. Firstly, some more background info concerning the men Andie was on the run from would have been nice. It’s very clear they are harsh and terrible leaders, but a bit more about their history with the dare, and Andie’s own interactions with them would’ve been good. Although I think this may have been touched upon in a previous anthology that I haven’t read yet!

The second aspect of the story where I was just hoping for more was the sex! But I’m weird like that, so I could see how others would enjoy the tamer sexual side of this novel. Andie and Jaxon have unbelievable chemistry, and we do get a few passionate details about their exploits beneath the sheets. However, I would have liked at least one scene where we could really see their inner animals let loose. Rawwwr!

*A copy of this book was provided for an honest review*

Series: Shadowcat Nation, book 1. Fabulous set up for book 2 at the end.

Should you read it? One of my favorite things about any book from Abigail Owen are the distinct paranormal elements brought into play, and this novel definitely doesn’t disappoint! From cougar to polar bear shifters, seers and healers, this one is surely unique. I loved the characters, the suspenseful plot, and damn near everything about it!

Smut Level: A bit of licking and rubbing in front of a fireplace during a snowstorm. What’s not to love?

A Witch’s Journey by Tena Stetler

Does anybody know where I can find a werewolf specimen of my own to be the perfect boyfriend? I mean, seriously they are in the best of shape, have alpha tendencies, not to mention amazing stamina. Although, they may also have the tendency to smell like a dog, so…yeah maybe not 100% perfect.

What’s it About?

Pepper McKay comes from a long line of powerful witches. Unfortunately, magic brings her nothing but trouble. She learned the love of wildlife rescue and rehab from her Aunt Ashling. After graduating from college, Pepper works for Salem Wildlife Sanctuary and lives from paycheck to paycheck until she inherits the McKay property in Lobster Cove. With the family land and resources, she dares to dream of starting her own wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center.

Lathen Quartz, a former Navy SEAL turned handyman maintains the enchanted McKay property for the McKay estate. But someone is trying to steal the McKay magic. Lathen offers to help Pepper achieve her life-long dream of building a wildlife center. During the long hours spent together on the project, their mutual attraction can’t be denied. But each harbors a deep, dark secret. Will they overcome their demons and give love a chance?

First Impressions

The characters in this book are extremely lovable. The plot manages to hold your interest. But in my opinion, the hands-down best aspect of this novel, as with most things in life, is location, location, location.

MaineCoastlineFrom the quiet seaside town of Lobster Cove, to the vast and beautiful expanse of Denali National Park in Alaska, the author manages to transport you to the seemingly unreal landscapes of America’s coasts. I’ve said before how the scenery of a novel can oftentimes become a character in it’s own right, and this statement definitely holds true in A Witch’s Journey.

A Little Drama

As for the dramatic aspect of this novel, it sure does start off on a high note as Pepper tries to adjust to being the outsider in a new town. From Lathen’s spurned love interests, to the rumblings of dark magic, Pepper doesn’t necessarily have the warmest of welcomes to Lobster Cove. I will say the intensity of the plot sort of fizzles towards the middle, as more attention is placed on establishing Pepper’s wildlife rehab center and her blossoming romance with Lathen.

Things do come together in the end for what one character even refers to as a rather “unclimactic” conclusion. I think this is a theme which runs true for other aspects of the novel as well in that things are, in a way, almost too easy for our characters. I think I would have liked a bit more tension over the fact that Pepper and Lathen were coming together from vastly different magical backgrounds. She’s a witch; he’s a werewolf. And yet, both families are extremely accepting of their relationship. I guess that’s just the modern world we live in!

*A copy of this book was provided for an honest review*

Series: Lobster Cove, book 1.

Should you read it? Just make sure you’ve saved up enough airline miles for either a trip to Maine or Alaska before starting this one! You’ll definitely get the urge to travel. I think the story could have been condensed a bit more to keep more of a flow to the drama, but a fun read overall with lovable characters.

Smut Level: Oh to get a werewolf alone and naked in a hot tub. Isn’t that the dream?

Free Books Anyone?

OMG you guys, I have a new addiction in life, and I wanted to share it with all of you. After all, who doesn’t love free books?

So a couple of weeks ago I was reading some international relations related article on, when I saw a link to another article called “Librarians Love this Website”. I immediately thought, mkay what the hell kind of click-bait scam article is this gonna be? This, ladies and gents, is how I was introduced to the wonderful world of BookBub, and life will never be the same again!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the site, it’s something you might want to try out. Basically, you sign up using your preferred e-mail address, indicate your favorite authors and genres, and then you let the free digital books come to you. Every day you get an e-mail from BookBub with a list of free and discounted books based on your individual preferences, which you can then purchase from Amazon, B & N, Apple, Google, or Kobo.

Now let’s get down to the pros and cons here.

  • You only receive notifications on free books or discounted books based on your preferences. When I signed up I was able to indicate which romance categories I preferred, and those are the only ones I get an e-mail about. So, I get all my juicy contemporary, new adult, and historical romances without having to weed through those with vampires and werewolves. You can also visit at any time and look at a ton of other genres for daily deals and free books.

  • I personally thought getting a daily e-mail would get really old, really fast. However, I’ve actually managed to keep up with it, and there’s an unsubscribe button if you get overwhelmed. Each e-mail only has about 5-6 book blurbs listed, and honestly I ignore all the ones that cost money. Therefore, I’m really only looking at about 3 free book options a day, and it’s a great way to take a break in the middle of a busy work day. You can also change your e-mail preferences so that you only get one e-mail a week, or so you never receive e-mails at all.
  • Although I personally don’t look at the books that cost money (because I am the cheapest person ever!), I think the highest cost of a book I’ve seen so far is $2.99. You really can be notified of some great book deals, but I could also see this as a con in that by spending $0.99 here, and $1.99 there, it could probably build up cost-wise if you weren’t careful. I’ve also tried to ignore the fact that so many of these free books have an audible add-on option for only $1.99. Just look the other way!

  • Since signing up for BookBub I’ve finished reading 4 of the free books I’ve purchased. I really enjoyed 2 of them, and disliked the other 2. Therefore, when it comes to quality I wouldn’t say you’re guaranteed an amazing read every time, although there are a lot of bestsellers on there. Then again, I literally paid zero dollars for any of these books, so I’m not gonna complain.
  • And now, for the biggest con of all. I would say I’m averaging about 1-2 free book “purchases” a day. A total of 29 books in the last 2 weeks. At this rate, I’m gonna need to buy a new Kindle sooner rather than later just to store them all.

Throwback Thursday: the Unloched Series

For some very unexplicable reason, I was feeling a bit nostalgic this week. I thought it would be fun to look back at one of my earliest, and favorite reviews. The book may not have been my favorite, but it was definitely unique. It was interesting to see how much my posts have evolved over time, considering when this little diddy was first published I didn’t include any pictures or gifs. So I decided to spiff it up a bit, and keep it more in line with my current reviewing style. I hope you all enjoy this throwback to some monster erotica between a young woman and the Loch Ness monster!

Original Post

I just love having this blog. I can guarantee that pre-blog me never would have had the wherewithal to read a novel categorized as monster erotica. But thanks to the author of this series providing me with a copy for review, I can now cross monster erotica off my checklist of books I never knew existed. That being said, this book was really freakin’ out there!

What’s it About?

Marsaili MacKirdy is a young widow running the Wild Thistle B&B in Drumnadrochit, a tiny tourist town on the shores of Loch Ness. Just when she finally finds the strength to move on with charming bartender Seamus Grant, the Loch reveals a life-changing secret: her husband is alive… and is the legendary monster of the loch. This new revelation throws Marsaili’s world into chaos, and the stakes grow ever higher as more come to learn the monster’s secrets…

First Impressions

When I first told my roommate that I was going to be reviewing a romance novel featuring the Loch Ness monster her immediate response was, “But Nessie’s a girl!” I’ll admit that although the synopsis was pretty far-fetched, it piqued my interest. I mean, it’s not every day that you find out the husband you thought had drowned over a year ago is actually the Loch Ness monster. The fact that Marsaili was just starting to move on with a handsome kilt-wearing bartender named Seamus adds another complication to the tale. How do you choose between the man you vowed to love forever, even though he now lives underwater, and a man who looks amazing wearing what is basically a skirt? And you thought Twilight had a complicated love triangle.

man of steelkilt

Let’s Talk About the Sex

To say it’s uncomfortably descriptive is an understatement. A year after her husband’s disappearance, Marsaili seems quite eager to be in the presence of male company again. Aka, she’s horny as hell! She might be initially hesitant to go on a first date with her long-time friend Seamus, but as the night wears on she’s more than ready to find out what the Scotsman is hiding under his kilt. Immediately following their raunchy sex scene, Marsaili is feeling rather reflective, so she goes down to the water to curse at the loch for stealing her husband away.

That’s when the monster reveals himself to be her husband, Leith. She’s wary at first. I mean, who wouldn’t be? For all we know this could really just be some random local street monster out on the prowl for a hot piece of human ass! But alas, it really is Leith, and that’s when things get freaky. In order to show Leith that she loves him no matter what, she chooses to have sex with him…in his monster form. The girl just had sex about 3 hours ago with a hunky bartender, and now she’s dropping her panties for a water dragon!!

Here’s My Problem

I’m all about lovin’ the one you’re with, but I just don’t find bestiality to be all that sexy. I mean, Leith is basically one step up from a dolphin. When Marsaili revealed her intentions, stripped naked, and started to crawl on the monster’s tummy, I think my actual reaction was, “What the f*&k is happening right now?” I was obviously horrified, but when Marsaili described the amazing feel of his flippers on her thighs I couldn’t help but burst out laughing. The dude has flippers, and she’s getting off on it! Am I the only one who finds this hilarious? Disgusting, yes, but also hilarious?

For the love of all things holy keep this woman away from Sea World, or we might have some indecent public exposure on our hands here. And our flippers. Ha! I crack myself up. Another feature of this sex scene which I couldn’t help but wonder at was the size proportion of Leith’s…how to put this delicately…male appendage. When I think of the Loch Ness monster I think of a huge creature that’s much larger than your average human. The fact that Marsaili could physically have sex with him in his true monster form seems to imply that he has a very sad excuse for a monster willy.

The Series Itself

So that’s the first 18 pages! Overall the series is made up of short sections, almost like novellas. To be honest, after the flippery love scene I almost put the book down for good, but then the section ended on a cliffhanger and I just had to find out what happened next. You see, there is this group of Nessie hunters who are led by the town nut job, and they steal Leith’s coat in an attempt to reveal his true identity to the world. Now you’re probably asking yourself the same question I did, why can’t he just go get another coat at Burlington’s? They have a great selection, and their prices are unbeatable! That’s because it’s the magical coat he must wear to change from his human form into his monster form, and if he doesn’t put it on he goes kind of crazy.

This was another aspect of the series which I feel could have been slightly improved upon. I’m embarrassed to say that my Scottish folklore is a bit rusty, so when Leith first revealed that he is a Niseag with a coat, which is similar to a Selkie, I was like, “Say what now?” Eventually everything is clearly explained, but some more description earlier on would have been much appreciated. In addition, Marsaili’s overactive libido was somewhat ill-placed at times. There is one point in the story where she and Seamus are trying to break Leith out of a giant tank the Nessie hunters built, and the two do the dirty while hiding in a closet with a patrolling hunter right outside the door. Dude, there are more important things going on right now. Keep your head in the game! Not you Seamus!!

The Love Triangle

And now for my last WTF reflection on this series: the love triangle. Marsaili is constantly debating throughout the entire book whether to end up with bartender Seamus, or flipper lover Leith. She weighs the pros and cons, and has plenty of sex with each man to ensure she can make an informed decision. Towards the end of the novel I honestly didn’t know who she was going to choose, and was intrigued to see how it would all play out. Her solution? Why choose one when you can have both? Well hello unexpected threesome!

Alright, so…sure, why not? I understand that sometimes you love two things so much that you can’t pick just one. I mean, every time I go to my favorite ice cream shop in my hometown I always order the chocolate and vanilla twist because one flavor just isn’t enough. It’s literally the best of both worlds. However, their first threesome experience is probably the most shocking and disturbing threesome I’ve ever read, as it includes Leith in his monster form again. Please, please stop with the bestiality!! It disturbs me.

As if that wasn’t weird enough, Leith uses his inordinately long monster tongue to engage in some neck-licking with Seamus, and the next day the two men decide to explore their own sexual feelings for one another. Again, sure! No problem. I just found it strange that the two men suddenly had this mutual attraction which seemingly came out of nowhere. It wasn’t even hinted at for the entire series until the last 5 pages or so. It almost seemed like once they all decided to be a couple, Seamus and Leith were like, “Eh, what the hell? You’ll be there, I’ll be there. Mind if I lick your ear?”

Series: The Unloched Series

Should you read it? Despite the weird shit which was happening sexually, the damn thing held my interest! The book was pretty ridiculous, but those cliffhangers at the end of each section kept me going. Monster lovin’ though? I don’t know.
