The Worse for Were by Abigail Owen

Nothing like a plethora of werewolf pheromones flying about to really get you in the mood.

What’s it About?

The Canis and Banes packs of werewolves have been feuding for centuries. The Hatfields and McCoys were a tea party in comparison. Until Marrok Banes, the Alpha of his pack, decides to end the fighting with a marriage of convenience. Never mind that he can’t keep his hands off his gorgeous new mate.

Tala Canis is the new Alpha of the Canis clan, the first female to claim that right, a position hard fought and won. For the sake of her people she agrees to wed Marrok. Never mind that the Alpha, once her enemy, makes her body flash heat with a single look.

But after the mating ceremony, Marrok only seems interested in one thing…taking over their combined pack while leaving Tala out of the loop. If her Alpha mate can’t learn to share, then it’s time to show him exactly why she’s an Alpha herself.

First Impressions

When it came to this book, I actually took a big risk by breaking my cardinal rule. I read it immediately after reading the first book in this series, which I absolutely adored. Normally when this happens, I try to read another book in between to try and tame my expectations. But with this many pheromones in the air, I simply couldn’t wait, and instead chose to dive right in. I’m happy to say that I loved this book just as mush as the first one! The plots of the two novels merge together and occur simultaneously, so I’d definitely recommend reading book 1 first. That way, you not only have a better understanding of what’s going on, but you have an even deeper connection to the characters.

Battle of the Alphas

All you know I’m a huge fan when it comes to an alpha leading man. Throw in an alpha werewolf, and oh nellie am I on board! After all, there tends to be a lot more licking involved. But throw an alpha female werewolf into the mix?! Good God in Heaven someone crack open a window from all the heat we’ve got going on around here.

On the one hand, you’ve got two alphas in the bedroom, or in some instances on a cave floor, and how could you not be intrigued by this? We’re all used to the male alpha being the dominating force in the bedroom, and Marrok can definitely rise to the call of duty. However, sometimes Tala takes the reigns to be on top and tie him up for a change. Love it!

On the other hand though, we see how combining 2 packs under 2 alphas can create a whole new set of challenges. Who is the ultimate decision maker? Can they both compromise in order to find a way to lead together, even if it means giving away a bit of their alpha-ness? When factions are created within the pack, and Tala’s leadership is threatened, they’ll have to find a way to make it work together.

Series: Legendary Consultants, book 2. I need the next book already!

Should you read it? This novel is a great read, and explores the facets of leadership conflicting with stereotypical gender norms. Intense and sexy moments make it a hard one to put down.

Smut Level: Two dominant alphas in the bedroom can only lead to delicious things in my opinion.

Her Demigod Complex by Abigail Owen

Alright, I’m starting to think that Abigail Owen is some kind of sorceress. I’m notorious for not being a huge fan of paranormal romance, but by goddess if this woman doesn’t make me like the genre! That’s gotta be some strong magic at work right there.

What’s it About?

When Legendary Consultants placed Lyleia Naiad in her job as Executive Assistant to a high-powered billionaire, she was given one directive–do NOT fall in love with him. Given that he’s a demigod, a successful businessman, and handsome as sin, makes that a tall order for anyone. But as an ex-nymph, she has the unique ability to resist his god-like charms.

Or does she? More than a year later, Castor Dioskouri has managed to capture her heart, a feat no man, demigod, or god has ever managed. Given the reason she was hired, she’s kept her feelings to herself. Besides, Cas is still in love with his deceased wife from over a millennium ago, and Leia is a failed nymph who couldn’t protect her own spring.

But now, they must attend a werewolf mating ceremony together. An event where the pheromones fly, and so do clothes, inhibitions, and common sense. Can Leia resist her heart and her boss? Or will she lose her pride, her job, and her mind trying?

First Impressions

I loved damn near everything about this book, and finished it in just a few hours. You can definitely finish it in one sitting. All you need is a comfy chair, a cup of cocoa and you’re good to go! Sure, a half-naked, six-pack ab demigod massaging your feet would be nice too, but let’s not get greedy. I loved the unique paranormal features of this novel, in that we are dealing with a nymph and a demigod rather than your typical vampire romance.

Sexy Powers

Nymphs are known for being sexually tantalizing, yet also for being able to resist the temptations of gods and demigods. However, throw in her sexy boss and a werewolf mating ritual with pheromones flying about like crazy, and Leia doesn’t stand a chance. She’s always had an interesting relationship with her boss. It’s one filled with respect, teasing, and a hidden lust on both their parts.

Leia is determined to resist Castor’s charms during this wedding weekend away, but deep down I think they both know the inevitable was bound to happen. Rumor has it that demigods can go all night in the bedroom. Leia and Castor have no problem putting that rumor to the test.

A Little Bit of This and That

This book might be short, but it has everything! Just the right amount of sexual tension build-up which eventually turns into a wonderful give-in to temptation. Then you’ve got an interesting side-plot surrounding the werewolf wedding itself, and one very pissed off werewolf determined to keep an ancient prophecy from coming true by any means necessary. Then you have their past histories which influence both the suspense and romance aspects of the story. And it’s all blended together so perfectly that no one feature outweighs the others.

Series: Legendary Consultants, book 1. I’m already reading the next book, which focuses on the bride and groom of this little werewolf wedding.

Should you read it? Yaaassss! It’s got everything you could want. A little magic, suspense, romance, sexxxx, and did I mention a bit of Greek mythology? Loooove it!

Smut Level: Not too much detail, but just the right amount. A demigod might be known for his speed, but with the right nymph in his bed he can go all night long.

Black Orchid by Abigail Owen

The third book in this series threw in one heck of a cliffhanger ending. Black Orchid continues on with that storyline, and brings the entire Svatura series to a dramatic close. I’m sad to see it end, but it sure was one heck of an exciting ride!

What’s it About?

black orchid

Only oblivion can stop her pain. Adelaide Jenner feels nothing…she is completely numb inside. Her fated love abandoned her and joined their enemy. On that day, her sister turned off all Adelaide’s emotions in order to save her from a heartbreak that could push her over the edge of sanity. But the great power she claims, wielded without compassion or love, can only lead to more pain.

Nate Pierce believes Adelaide used her extraordinary powers to deceive him all these years. So he destroyed a relationship he thought to be false and hungers for revenge. Now, Nate serves Maddox, unaware that his new leader is using him as a pawn in a bid to enslave or kill all Svatura. The only hope of finally defeating Maddox is for Adelaide and her sisters to combine their growing powers against him. But the key to a Svatura’s power is the heart, and Adelaide is still missing hers.

First Impressions

I must say, I was kind of hesitant to start this last book. At the close of book 3 we saw the te’sorthene bond break between Nate and Adelaide as he left to fight alongside their sworn enemy. Brainwashing can be such a bitch! I was worried that these two would spend the majority of the book apart, or fighting with each other. However, I was pleasantly surprised to encounter what was probably the most dynamic plot of the series. Although, book 3 was pretty bad ass too. Gah, they were both amazing!

Adelaide is absolutely heartbroken over Nate’s betrayal, so her sister decides to shut off Adelaide’s emotions completely. This strategy backfires as it makes Adelaide a threat to those around her, so the family makes the fateful decision to wipe away her memory of Nate entirely.  Yes, this does sort of read like an episode/season of The Vampire Diaries, but I don’t even care because that show is freakin’ awesome.

As Adelaide spends time alone recuperating in the Australian Outback, Nate is sent on a mission from the devious Maddox to approach Adelaide as a lost backpacker, and gain her trust so that she can be used as a pawn in his war against the Svatura. This is when the novel takes a step up from interesting, to “oh crap I should have left for work 10 minutes ago” interesting. Translation: tough to put down!

No Point Denying It

Nate has been brainwashed by Maddox’s minions to believe that Adelaide and her family are his enemies, but as he spends more time alone with her he can’t deny that there is a sense of camaraderie and belonging between them. Adelaide herself is initially wary of this stranger, but she also can’t deny the calming effect he has over her, and their growing bond of friendship. Not to mention a hint of lust! And cue sexy eyebrow waggle.

The entire book builds to a dramatic climax of one final battle between Maddox’s forces and all of the characters we’ve come to know and love throughout this magical series. There’s a decent amount of combined girl power at the very end that was almost a bit too much for me. Almost. There are also some acts of violence which were almost questionable in their vehemence. Again, almost. But on top of that you also have the sense of family and love that has permeated the whole series, and you can’t help but enjoy seeing all of these characters come together to protect their friends and loved ones from someone who has caused them nothing but pain and heartache. Overall, I’d have to say it was a fantastic conclusion.

Series: Svatura series. Four books in total. I’d have to say book 2 was probably my least favorite, but these last two novels made me late to work on several occasions.

Should you read it? If you’re looking for a romance series that has elements of magic, but not a whole lot of sex, then I’d say it’s perfect for you. The characters are truly what make this series not only unique, but memorable.

Smut Level: There was one steamy make-out session in this book, but Nate and Adelaide spend most of the book trying to deny their underlying feelings of desire for one another. Ha! Try all you want sillies.
