She Laughs in Pink by Jessica Calla

I tried you guys. I tried so hard. For a minute there I really thought I’d be able to make it to the end of this book without crying. But alas, in the last 20 pages or so I was a sniveling mess of tears.

What’s it About?

Four years after her twin is murdered, Juliet Anderson still struggles with guilt, her parents, and her relationships. Two things keep her from falling into a deep, dark place—dancing and her best friend, Ben. So when Ben decides to play football for New Jersey University, Juliet doesn’t hesitate. She follows. Finally away from her past, there is nothing to stand in the way. Juliet will win Ben’s heart. Then she meets Ben’s roommate, Chase.

On probation and hell-bent on adhering to a “new life plan,” aspiring artist Chase leaves his New York City home for New Jersey University and meets Juliet before even stepping foot on campus. For him, their connection is instant. She’s the most vibrant girl he’s ever seen. Her colors explode on his canvas, and he’s never been more inspired in his life. Too bad she’s madly in love with his seemingly perfect, good guy roommate.

First Impressions

This entire book was one whole roller coaster of emotion, and you can’t help but sit along for the ride. At the start you kind of assume it’ll be a sweet and predictable college romance, but it evolves to be so much more. There’s an incredibly unique story with some interesting, almost on the verge of being fantastical, elements woven in as well. After all, how many people do you know who can “see” another person’s colors? Chase can sort of see the aura/personality of the lovely ballerina, Juliet, and when she laughs, she laughs in pink.

Endearingly Imperfect

I had a lot of trouble putting this book down. You can’t help but wonder where all of our characters will end up, and the story goes in several different surprising and heart-wrenching directions that you just couldn’t have seen coming.

However, something that is extremely important to remember is that although our characters are remarkably endearing, they are far from perfect. They make mistakes. Sometimes they are emotionally broken. They can make stupid decisions that could possibly cause some readers a lot of confusion and frustration. This is especially true when it comes to Juliet as she struggles with her feelings for Ben, her best friend that she’s been pining after for years, and Chase, the young artist who sees the real her.

I guess I was lucky in that I was just always in a pretty good mood whenever I picked up my Kindle to read this one, so I never got too overwhelmingly frustrated. Instead, I personally enjoyed seeing the characters grow from bright-eyed and somewhat naive freshman, to an entire dorm floor that managed to become a family.

Series: Sheridan Hall, book 1. I can’t imagine what could come next, but I can’t wait to find out!

Should you read it? You need to go into this one with the expectation that there’s a 75% chance you’ll cry, and you’ll probably roll your eyes at some of the silly mistakes that all young college kids are bound to make. But if you stick with it, you’ll see the beautiful relationships that can bloom and evolve in Sheridan Hall.

Smut Level: Gotta love the flirtations between Juliet and Chase. There are some sexy scenes between them, but they spend the majority of the time trying to figure out how they truly feel about each other.

Over the Top by Rebecca Zanetti

The sexual tension between these two has been simmering throughout the entire series, and it has finally boiled over the top!

What’s it About?

over the top

Dawn Freeze had a huge crush on Hawk Rain for years, and the entire town knows it. It’s understandable―the man is total hotness. That tall, lean body. Intense dark eyes. And always one foot out the door. Now he’s on leave for exactly one week. And this time, he’s made it crystal clear that he only wants one thing. Her.

Hawk’s been fighting his attraction to Dawn for as long as he can remember. She’s his best friend’s little sister, and that means hands-off. Except now she’s all grown up, and her sweet sexiness is exactly what he craves. But just as Hawk allows himself one mindblowingly intense night with Dawn, he learns that everyone he loves is in danger. Especially her. And the only way to protect Dawn is to push her away…

First Impressions

I have been waiting for this story of forbidden love since book one, and I am beyond thrilled that I finally got to read it! Overall this entire series was funny, sexy, full of lovable characters, and this last book was no exception. The drama was probably the most far-fetched of the bunch, and kind of hard to believe. Hawk is determined to bring a person from his military team to justice for selling drugs, but his continued involvement in the whole ordeal and determination to always catch the bad guy was kind of frustrating after a while. Mainly because it meant he would have to put his relationship with Dawn on hold, and he’s been doing that for years already.

No Point in Hiding

I adored the fact that Hawk and Dawn initially wanted to keep their new sexual relationship a secret since Dawn’s brothers have always disapproved of her getting involved with the troubled soldier. However, they quickly admit to themselves that trying to keep a secret in their small town is impossible. Dawn immediately confesses to her group of girlfriends that the plethora of rumors about Hawk’s sexual prowess were all true, and Hawk can’t lie to Dawn’s brothers who have treated him like a brother of their own since childhood. After a quick punch to his face, all is well, and they accept the fact that their friend is dating their little sister.

Dawn and Hawk’s close friends aren’t the only ones who are aware that something is going on of a sexual nature behind closed doors. Two of the local towns ladies, Mrs. Hudson and Mrs. Poppins, take a particular interest in their relationship, and are so inappropriate and adorable I can’t even handle it. The scene where they present a bag of “goodies”, aka sex toys, for Dawn to use with Hawk is particularly hilarious. You can’t help but love their imposition into the goings on between Dawn and Hawk in the bedroom.

Series: Maverick Montana, book 4. A delightful end to the series.

Should you read it? I would recommend this series if you are looking for a contemporary romance between a man who can ride a horse, and a woman who can ride that man. Books 1 and 2 were probably my favorites, but each one is full of sexy fun times, and great characters.

Smut Level: Hawk is a kinky son of a gun. He’s more than happy to give Dawn a spanking, and tie her up with a silk scarf. This man’s got skills.

Crazy About You by Katie O’Sullivan

Ah, there’s nothing quite like a summer at the Cape…mixed with a touch of murder! Mua ha ha!

What’s it About?

crazy about you

Climate scientist Chase Anderson races from one project to the next, unwilling to slow down in his quest to save the world’s oceans. He has no time for family or relationships until he crashes into an impetuous blonde with a quirky sense of humor. One sizzling kiss makes him seriously reevaluate his priorities. And his sanity.

Emma Maguire left her small Cape Cod hometown years ago, seeking the fast pace and anonymity of New York City. She’s not sure what she’s searching for, but when a family crisis brings her home to Provincetown she’s caught in a crazy tangle of half-truths and mistaken identity… and falls for the handsome stranger who broke her cell phone. Will untangling the web of lies drive them crazy, or lead to something even crazier – like love?

First Impressions

Emma and Chase literally bump into each other. After going through the necessary back and forth misunderstandings required of most any romance novel, they admit they have an obvious connection, and decide to explore things further by going on a date. I’ll admit, initially I had no real idea where this story was going after having such a classic/cheesy meet cute. But before you know it they come across a dead body on their date, and get wrapped up in mob family business. Did NOT see that coming!

no way

Some Twists

What you think will be a quick summer fling love story suddenly twists into a suspenseful story of murder. Who knew?! What I really loved about this book was that Chase stood by Emma through everything, even though they just met. The story might have some elements of mob intrigue, but it still maintains the underpinnings of a classic romance, and sticking together through the worst of any situation.

I do think Emma and Chase may have had one too many misunderstandings which led to arguments seemingly on repeat. For example, Emma’s best friend Tony is linked to the mob, and she must insist multiple times throughout the novel that they never dated. Come on Chase, she’s already said so 5 times, I think you can believe her when she says it for a sixth. That being said, Emma also makes a few questionable/not-so-intelligent decisions surrounding Tony’s mob connections, so I guess it goes to show that nobody’s perfect. Definitely keeps the story interesting though.

Series: Stand-alone!

Should you read it? A bit frustrating at times when Emma puts herself in seemingly obvious danger, and the constant misunderstandings between her and Chase. That being said, the kooky townsfolk are one of the best features of the book, and you’ll wonder how everything will come together in the end.

Smut Level: Some intense kisses lead to something hotter than the August weather at the Cape!
