Tempting the Bodyguard by J. Lynn

The last novel in the Gamble Brothers series. Overall, probably my favorite book of the three, but unfortunately that’s not saying too much.

What’s it About?

tempting the bodyguard

Alana Gore is in danger. A take-no-prisoners publicist, her way with people has made her more than a few enemies over the years, but a creepy stalker is an entirely different matter. She needs a bodyguard, and the only man she can ask is not only ridiculously hot, but reputed to have taste for women that goes beyond adventurous. Chandler Gamble has one rule: don’t protect anyone you want to screw. But with Alana, he’s caught between his job and his increasingly hard libido. On one hand, Alana needs his help. On the other, Chandler wants nothing more than to take the hot volcano of a woman in hand. To make her writhe in pleasure, until she’s at his complete mercy. She needs protection. He needs satisfaction. And the moment the line is crossed, all hell will break loose.

First Impressions

Normally I’m a huge fan of anything in the Entangled Brazen collection, but there was something about this series that just didn’t do it for me. Each book in the series was just kind of “meh”. Sexy and generally entertaining, but the characters and story lines never truly wowed me. While I did find this to be the most enjoyable novel in the series, I think when all was said and done none of them are really a must read. However, you gotta give it to Alana, this woman is all about timing. When she first met Chandler in a previous novel it was to him opening the door wearing nothing but boxers. Since that time the two have thought of each other every now and again, mainly concerning what the other would look like naked. In this novel, Alana needs to employ Chandler’s security services, so she seeks him out in a sex club where he’s in the process of…well…let’s just say approaching a scantily clad woman from behind on a chaise. See what I mean? A woman of timing.

Doormen and Security Cameras

Alana is getting settled in Washington, DC after moving across the country from the West Coast. Surprisingly, in spite of such a long distance move she continues to receive stalker-like letters from a mystery someone. As the letters increase in their creepiness, and the writer promises they’ll meet in person soon, Alana realizes she has no choice but to seek out the services of a personal bodyguard. Luckily, she has just the man in mind.

Although Chandler often deals with higher level security issues, he simply can’t say no to the tough-as-nails publicist who helped his brother find his one true love. As he takes on the case, Chandler quickly notices the lack of security at Alana’s apartment in the form of a doorman, or even adequate security cameras. This raises his concern for the easy access a possible stalker would have in getting to her. This also raised my, “really?” hackles.

really

As a DC resident myself, I’m sorry but I have to question the likelihood of this. Alana has a great job that pays a lot. She owns a Lexus for goodness sake in a city where cars really aren’t necessary, and she also has no financial concerns about hiring Chandler’s private bodyguard services. I highly doubt the woman would live in a building with no doorman, or at least a front desk person. For the love of God my apartment building has a front desk check-in, and I’m confident in saying I don’t earn more money than Alana. No Lexus for me!! Now, in the grand scheme of things, does this truly matter? Not really. However, when a stalker does proceed to break in to Alana’s apartment, trashing it to hell before escaping into the night, I couldn’t help but think “really?”

A Dominant Man, A Stressed-Out Woman

After Alana’s apartment is ripped to shreds by her unknown stalker, there seems to be little choice for her but to temporarily move in with Chandler. Count down to sexy naked times in 3, 2, 1…commence. Somewhat known to Alana, Chandler’s sexual proclivities swing more to the d/s side of things. Minus a playroom of course. While Alana might not be up for everything he’s willing to offer her, she decides to take a chance on exploring her lustful feelings for Chandler.

blindfold

The two make an agreement that they won’t have intercourse right away, but everything else is fair game. Here is where I had some slight issue with Chandler’s approach to their sexual relationship. While I was happy he didn’t push her for full on intercourse right away, the first thing they do is some oral while he ties her hands behind her back. Don’t get me wrong, totally hot scene, but I couldn’t help but feel it was rather ill-timed. Alana has basically moved in with him after all of her possessions were destroyed at the hands of a stalker who is sending her creepy notes, and has already smashed her car with a brick. Maybe don’t tie her up? She’s had a rough enough week as it is! Restricting her movement during sexy times probably isn’t a great step in the right direction mentally or emotionally.

The Cream of the Crop

Hands down Alana was the most captivating character and feature of this entire novel. Actually, strike that, of the entire series. In the previous novel she was presented as kind of a bitch. A heartless character who would do anything to get the job done, even if it meant basically blackmailing our female lead from book 2. In this final book however, we get to see another side to Alana’s character. Vulnerability.

vulnerability

We learn about her troubled past with absentee parents, and how she was raised by a loving grandmother who always pushed her to be strong. Alana reaches a breaking point when her home is vandalized by the stalker. This was her safe space, and she literally has no friend or family to go to for help. Chandler is her one last resort. In that moment, when she’s standing on his doorstep with her few possessions, we see that the harsh persona she’s previously showed us is all a ruse.

Series: Gamble Brothers, book 3.

Should you read it? If you’ve made it this far in the series I would say this is definitely a good one to end with. If you’re considering this series from the outset I personally think it’s one you can skip. There are a lot of other more exciting novels in the Entangled Brazen collection to choose from.

Smut Level: For a man who has a sex club membership I was pleasantly surprised he never frequented said establishment with Alana. They keep their sexplorations to his home.

Tempting the Player by J. Lynn

I have determined that my favorite kinds of audiobooks are those with both a male and female narrator. When it’s just the one over the other I find that female narrators tend to go way too deep with the male voices, whereas male narrators make the female leads sound all breathy and whiny. Unfortunately, this book falls into the latter category.

Chad Gamble, all-star pitcher for the Nationals, is one of the best players on—and off—the field. And right now, the notorious bad boy wants Bridget Rodgers. But with her lush curves and snappy comebacks, the feisty redhead is the kind of woman a man wants to settle down with…and that’s the last thing Chad needs.

When the paparazzi catch them in a compromising position, Chad’s manager issues an ultimatum: clean up his act or kiss his multi-million dollar contract goodbye. To save his career, his meddling publicist says he’ll have to convince everyone Bridget isn’t just his flavor of the week, but his girlfriend.

Being blackmailed into a fake relationship with Chad Gamble isn’t easy, especially when the sizzling physical attraction between them is undeniable. With a month to go on their arranged pretense, it’s going to take every ounce of willpower they have not to fall into bed together…or in love.

First Impressions

These two have perfected the art of dancing around not only their feelings for each other, but also their sexual relationship. The entire novel is basically a do-si-do of slow, slow, quick, quick, slow. Upon first meeting they are quick to go back to his place where it doesn’t take long for Chad to bring Bridget to the ultimate pleasure point. However, it’s when he’s in the bathroom cleaning up that she gets intimidated over the concept of dating a player, so she flees.

When they reunite some time later, and Bridget is basically blackmailed by Chad’s publicist to date the player, she consistently puts a hold on any moment of sexual tension between them. It takes a loooooong time before they do anything intimate again, and it’s only because Chad says enough is enough. Let’s do this! When they do come together they definitely do it right, but it was a frustrating build-up to finally get there.

Contractual Lovers

As the story progresses, you quickly realize that it’s only a matter of time before something goes wrong between our contractual lovers here. After all, after so much build-up for them to finally end up in bed together, something’s gotta go wrong! In this instance, they have a pretty large spat over a minuscule misunderstanding which could have been resolved soooo easily!!! So frustrating.

200

At one point during this large spat between them, Bridget thinks/complains to herself, “He won’t even listen to me for 2 seconds to explain myself!” In this instance, there was literally zero exaggeration. In the span of 2 seconds, Bridget could have resolved their entire argument, but instead she chooses to keep her mouth shut, and let Chad walk out the door in a hissy fit. Yes, he was being a whiny little douche who jumped to conclusions, but the fact that Bridget didn’t just yell out the truth at the top of her lungs made me more annoyed with her than with our temper tantrum throwing Chad.

Series: Gamble Brothers, book 2.

Should you read it? Definitely has it’s frustrating moments, but also some sexy ones thrown in there too.

Smut Level: At one point Chad reaches his breaking point, and decides there’s no point waiting anymore when they both obviously want it so bad. Gotta love he comes to this realization when they’re in a dressing room.
