The Reluctant Savior by Rebecca Hefner

Just when you thought this paranormal romance series couldn’t get any better, author Rebecca Hefner delivers in the best way possible!

What’s it About?

45177397._SY475_

Evie, daughter of virtuous Princess Rina and malicious Deamon King Crimeous, is a woman torn in half. The first centuries of her life taught her fervent lessons about pain and suffering. For ages, she suppressed her mother’s noble blood, crafting a reality where she was drifting along, needing no one. Until an ancient prophecy calls to her, possibly creating a purpose for her squalid existence.

Kenden has commanded the Slayer army for a thousand years. Strong, cunning and loyal, he longs for the day when Crimeous has been defeated and he can settle down to build a family. Focused on conquering the Dark Lord, he is stunned when Evie makes a brazen demand that must be fulfilled before she chooses to fight with them.

Although incensed by Evie’s ultimatum, Kenden has never desired a woman more than the flame-haired vixen. Though she stirs his ire, he also has a deep well of compassion for the beauty who suffered so much trauma centuries ago. Together they train, and by night their connection grows, building toward the moment when they will battle her father. But, in the end, Evie has a choice and struggles to espouse righteousness over malevolence. For, when one’s worst fears are exposed, the evil is so much easier to embrace…

First Impressions

I have been waiting for Evie and Kenden’s story since the first book in this series. With each passing novel their chemistry and teasing nature has slowly developed, and my craving for what would inevitably be a complicated relationship between them has continued to grow as well. I’m so pleased to say that this fourth installment of the Etherya’s Earth series does not disappoint, both in terms of the romance between Evie and Kenden, and the final climactic battle between good and evil which we’ve seen building throughout the series.

0003e7f88ab96e00e1159111cc5176da

Vampires and Slayers alike believe that Evie is the fated being to fulfill the ancient prophecy of defeating her evil Deamon father, King Crimeous. She’s hesitant to join their forces, but eventually she identifies the one thing that will finally get her to agree. That would be Kenden. She wants him. He wants her. And yet, he constantly denies them the release they’re both craving, so Evie declares a fantastically delicious ultimatum. She’ll agree to bring down her father, but only if she can get Kenden in her bed. For his part, Kenden believes in monogamy, and giving himself fully to one woman at a time. He refuses to go for a quick tussle between the sheets with Evie, so when she offers her proposition he agrees on one condition. For every time they do the horizontal mambo, Kenden and Evie also have to go out on a date to get to know each other better. You gotta love these two! They both give as good as they get.

Love and Turmoil

I mean, what’s not to love about the premise of these two finally coming together?! With every date, Kenden manages to dig deeper to understanding the complicated character that is Evie. She is the definition of a troubled heroine. One with a painful past and a darkness within her that is constantly trying to take over. As these two strong-willed characters spend more time together, Evie discovers that her attraction to Kenden isn’t merely grounded in the physical, but rather he represents a calming figure whom she can identify and enjoy spending time with. Both within and outside of the bedroom. However, amidst this pull she feels towards Kenden, we also witness a deep inner turmoil which is constantly threatening to force the two apart.

source (1)

As we mentioned, Evie is a troubled character, possibly even more so than her brother who was the focus of the third novel. Whereas he experienced some brief moments of affection from their mother during his childhood, by the time Evie came along her mother was completely broken from the constant abuse of Crimeous. She has never known love, but rather only heartache, pain, torture, and rape. Her blood runs with that of her evil father, which makes Evie think she’s not worthy of anyone’s love. But Kenden can recognize the soft side to her nature, and refuses to give up on her. The more he inserts himself in her life, the more she falls for him, but also the more she tries to convince herself that he’s merely trying to win her over so she’ll fight on their side in the upcoming battle against evil. The constant turmoil these characters face in terms of loving, yet also questioning each other, was a fascinating give and take you can’t possibly turn away from.

Series: Etherya’s Earth, book 4. Imagine my utter shock and surprise to discover that this won’t be the last we’ll see of this series! The epilogue provides us with a set-up for a fifth book, and I am so excited to continue on with this series. Definitely some of the best novels I’ve had the pleasure of reading in 2019.

Final Impressions: A stellar read from start to finish. You’re constantly wondering if Evie will ultimately give into the dark side of her personality, and if she does whether or not Kenden will succeed in bringing her back to the light. I absolutely loved the fact that interspersed throughout Kenden and Evie’s tale we caught glimpses of the origin story to Crimeous’ evil past. Something else we saw littered throughout the novel were two side romances involving some of our favorite supporting characters. While I adored these tales, I did question at times how they were interwoven into the overall book, as they sort of distracted us from the main story. Especially considering we’ll have another book in store for us, I wonder if it would have been better to save at least one of these side romances for book 5. Overall though, an incredibly suspenseful tale with amazing characters!

Smut Level: Evie’s ability to remove clothing with her mind proves to be particularly useful in her interactions with Kenden.

The Enforcer by Abigail Owen

Sparks are certainly flying in this dragon shifter paranormal romance!

What’s it About?

the enforcer

Death comes for everyone. Even Drake Chandali. The aging process that twists all unmated dragon shifters’ bodies into something useless has taken hold of his body centuries early. A mate could have reversed the process, but now it’s too late. To protect his team of enforcers, he leaves, and comes face to face with the woman he’d thought was human when he saved her from a fire months before.

Except she’s not human. She’s a mate.

Camilla Carrillo almost lost her family to wildfire. To discover she’s fated to mate a creature made of flame and rage, and become one herself, should be terrifying. But somehow a rightness settles inside her, especially when she’s around the glowering red dragon shifter who wants nothing to do with her.

When Drake learns Cami bears his mark—the same mark as the High King—he refuses to believe she’s meant to be his. It’s too late. How could he turn Cami only to take her with him to the grave? At the same time, he can’t walk away. Hiding her from the corrupt, rotting High King might be the last honorable thing Drake ever does with the little time he has left.

First Impressions

Whenever I begin one of these dragon shifter romances, I always find myself surprised how determined these men often are to ignore the signs that their mate is right in front of them. Of all the books in this series so far though, I would have to say that Drake had the most compelling and understandable reason. All of the signs point to say that Camilla is his destined mate, staring him right in the face. Her proximity, her touch, make him feel alive in a way he’s never felt before. He feels drawn to her from the very first moment he lays eyes on her. And yet, he does everything within his power to try and push her away. The reason? He’s dying.

b05d4557-aa08-4bb6-9c45-10c279203165

All unmated dragons eventually age die if they ultimately go too long without mating. This degenerative process usually impacts dragons centuries down the road, but for Drake it’s hitting him earlier than anyone would have expected. He’s too proud to admit to his shifter teammates the sad fate that he knows will overtake him soon, as he quickly starts losing the ability to move, so he decides to abandon them to die out in peace without the need for them to witness his decline. When he runs to an old friend to live out his last days, he’s confronted with Camilla, and the very real possibility that she’s his mate. Rather than feeling a sense of relief at finding the one person meant for him, he instead refuses to hope that she could be his salvation.

382cb8f9-2749-427b-960f-0a5abe8b490b.jpg

Better to Have Loved and Lost…

Drake is convinced he’s too far gone to be pulled back from the brink, and worries that if they should proceed with the mating process when they are in fact too late, his eventual death would result in Camilla’s death too following their solidified link as mates. He vows he’ll never risk her life in an attempt to save his own. However, just as much as I admired Drake’s selfless determination to protect, you’ve gotta love Camilla’s stubbornness above all else!

hqdefault.jpg

She might be new to this world of dragons, mates, councils and enforcers, but when she acknowledges wholeheartedly that Drake is her destined mate, her reaction to his attempts to push her away are fabulous. Essentially, tough shit buddy! Yes, mating might eventually link them together in a way that would simultaneously cause her death with his own, but Camilla realizes that she would rather spend those few precious moments with Drake linked in the most firm emotional and physical connection possible, than to live out the rest of her life never having experienced it. She refuses to turn her back on him, and it was quite entertaining to see this slight woman stand up to an imposing and surly dragon shifter. You get it girl!

Series: Fire’s Edge, book 3. This series by Abigail Owen is an absolute delight, as is the corresponding Inferno Rising series which focuses on the clan kings rather than this enforcer team of shifters. There’s action, romance, political intrigue, deception, and of course some fantastical elements mixed in as well. What’s not to like?

Final Impressions: This was a great addition to the series. The moments where we witness vulnerability from this seemingly brusque, tough dragon were by far the most compelling. He gives off this air as though nothing can infiltrate the protective barriers he’s set up around himself, but Camilla has taken hold of his heart and refuses to let go. A missing element to this book which was featured prominently in the previous novels was the brotherly connection of these dragon enforcers. It makes sense in a way in that Drake didn’t want his team to witness his decay, and he’s leaving them behind so as not to have to struggle through an emotional goodbye. This results in the story being much more focused on his relationship with Camilla. There’s definitely nothing wrong with that, and while we get a few scenes which highlight the brotherly affection of the Huracan Enforcer team, I think I would have enjoyed another scene or two involving these dragons coming together as brothers.

Smut Level: Some dragon shifters have the unique ability to shift only certain parts of their bodies without fully shifting into their dragon form. For Drake, he has the unique ability to shift his human tongue into a forked dragon tongue. Camilla discovers that’s quite a handy trick to have in the bedroom.

The Darkness Within by Rebecca Hefner

If you’re looking for a romance novel featuring a conflicted hero and a tough-as-nails heroine, then look no further. This paranormal read has everything you could possibly want and more!

What’s it About?

43823473._SY475_

Arderin, princess of the illustrious Vampyre kingdom, has always marched to the beat of her own drum. Motivated by a calling to heal others, frustration consumes her since her brother, King Sathan, doesn’t understand her desire to study medicine in the human world. Moreover, the son of the Dark Lord Crimeous has moved onto their compound and he seems obsessed with driving her absolutely insane. Hating him for his sharp tongue and dark nature, she tries to squelch her unwelcome attraction to him.

Darkrip has been enthralled by Arderin since the night he knocked her unconscious and sent her down the river, prompting the end of the War of the Species. Never has he met a woman more beautiful and passionate. Frustrated by her dramatics and consumed by his desire for her, he vows to stay away. For the son of Crimeous, with his malevolent blood, could never have children or a normal life.

When Crimeous threatens both their lives, forcing them into a shared captivity, they do everything they can to escape and survive. As their connection grows, so does their attraction. Knowing they have no future together, and the consequences of furthering their relationship would be disastrous, they forge ahead in the conflict against the Dark Lord. But the Universe is fickle and can muddle with even the best laid intentions…

First Impressions

I have been impatiently waiting for the book which would highlight this stubborn couple since the first novel in the series! At last, said book has been delivered and does not disappoint. Arderin and Darkrip are delightfully strong-willed, and at first glance appear to have an intense animosity towards each other which impacts their ability to even be in the same room. But when they’re forced to spend time together through either mission or complication, we finally see them having to confront the deep emotion and attraction which is constantly pulling them together no matter how hard they try to push each other away. I mean, what’s not to love with that set-up!

giphy (1)

Beyond the Romance

If we push the intense and sometimes controversial romance between Darkrip and Arderin aside, there are a few other key features presented in this novel that I really appreciated. First and foremost, the importance of family is highlighted through a variety of different relationship pairings. From Arderin and her over-protective brothers, to Darkrip’s complicated interactions with his sister and half-sister, to the couple from the first novel finally welcoming a child into their lives. Each pairing has it’s own complexities, yet throughout it all we see this group of slayers, vampyres and deamons come together to form the most unlikely of families.

cb65a3cac4b53a534ef99c76c0c864f1

The other theme that this series has continuously grappled with is the concept of time for our Immortals. In the last book, we saw how time was explored in a way where our characters felt they had all the time in the world to eventually admit their feelings for each other, yet simultaneously discovered how fraught and limited time can be in this violent world. In this third book, time is once again featured as a focal point which can impact the relationships of our characters. When you live forever, you can’t help but question what is your true purpose in life? For Darkrip, he looks at his life as being divided into two parts: a time before and after Arderin. Before her, he simply floated along. He lived in an endless, mindless world of killing and raping. After her, he finally feels as though he has a purpose, even if it’s something as simple as making her laugh. It is because of her that he remembers the small pleasures that life has to offer, and this troubled deamon finally starts to live again. It was such a complex and beautiful point to examine that never felt too “in your face” with its scrutiny.

c6017692dca41bc012bbbf3f4ff17562

The Cave of Wonders

There is a point in this novel where Arderin and Darkrip find themselves trapped in a cave by his evil father, Crimeous. This Deamon King is intent on forcing our two leads to mate, resulting in a child with both deamon and vampyre blood running through its veins that he can then manipulate and train to become his ultimate weapon. Hands down, these scenes involving Arderin and Darkrip’s imprisonment were the most revealing and poignant moments of the entire book. For it is during this time that they have nowhere to run or hide from confronting how much they actually care about the other. All their cards are laid out, face up on the table, whether they want to or not. And it’s during this time where we discover how vulnerable these two characters truly are. They may put on a facade of toughness to those around them, yet underneath all the stubbornness and sass are two sensitive souls who can no longer deny their feelings.

maxresdefault

It’s also during this time in the cave that we see how strong and inspiring they are. For her part, Arderin refuses to give up hope that they’ll make it out of this seemingly hopeless situation alive. For Darkrip, we see his desperation to do whatever is necessary to keep Arderin alive. Even if it means she’ll see a window into his entire past, and every dark deed he’s ever committed. The only way to save his vampyre is to give her his blood, which will thereby link her to him by viewing snapshots of his entire life. To ensure the survival of the love of his life, he must allow her to see how much evil has coursed through him, and risk her never wanting anything to do with him. Again, such a beautifully revealing moment to see this cocky, strong deamon crumble under the fear of being alone, and of possibly losing Arderin forever. Either he’ll lose her through death, or through his attempt to save with his blood. He sees it as a lose-lose decision, but one he can’t ran away from.

vampire_diaries_a_l

The Troubled Hero

Darkrip is a troubled soul in every sense of the word. He refuses to see the good in himself, and also refuses to hope for a future with Arderin. He’s spent so long living in the shadow of his evil and cruel father, that it’s difficult for him to envision a future of peace. Growing up, whenever Darkrip allowed himself to feel or love it would always result in pain. His father would repeatedly rape and abuse his mother and sister as Darkrip was forced to watch on. He’s scared that if he allows himself to acknowledge his love for Arderin, she’ll become a target for his father to focus his wrath upon. He’s not willing to risk that.

original

Darkrip was so convinced that by providing Arderin with his blood in the cave that it would result in her pulling away from him. However, we see the opposite come true in that it actually causes her to pull him closer. Yes, there was evil in Darkrip which controlled his every action for the first 200 years of his life. But through the love and influence of his mother he successfully changed his ways to fight against that inner darkness, and refused to let it overtake him again over the last 800 years. That strength, that willpower, is what draws Arderin to him even more. He might be convinced she deserves better, and try to push her away with all his might, but she’s just as stubborn and strong-willed to keep him in her life.

Series: Etherya’s Earth, book 3. Three books down, just one final installment to go. I can’t wait to see how everything will come together in what is bound to be a climactic and exciting conclusion!

Final Impressions: Looking back at the entire series up until this point I would say this is probably the one which featured the least amount of direct confrontation with our primary villain, Crimeous. This is kind of interesting when you consider the fact he’s Darkrip’s father, and the two definitely have a long and troubled history. That being said, the emotional and psychological impact of this toxic father/son relationship is still featured prominently in this third book. In a way this is really Darkrip’s tale of learning how to see the good in himself, and acknowledging that he is worthy of Arderin’s love. These two have a commanding presence that will captivate you right from the get-go, whether they’re in a scene together or solo.

Smut Level: This is by far the steamiest book of the series so far. As a deamon, Darkrip experiences pleasure from pain, and while we don’t get any scenes that are overly kinky, that sort of speaks to the fact that this deamon isn’t a slow and gentle lover. There’s plenty of dirty talk and alpha male direction in the bedroom to keep you blushing and satisfied!

The Elusive Sun by Rebecca Hefner

Vampyres have lived in the dark for centuries. For Lila and Latimus, openly declaring their love for each other seems just as elusive as seeing the sun again.

What’s it About?

42929991._SY475_

Lila, a high born aristocrat of the Vampyre kingdom, was betrothed to Sathan, King of the Vampyres, for a thousand years. The betrothal, declared by the goddess Etherya, was deemed unbreakable. Although she cared for Sathan, and loved him as her king, secretly her heart yearned for his brother. When Sathan falls for another, Lila ends the betrothal, terrified at what her life will become now that she won’t be queen.

Latimus has loved Lila since they played together on the grassy riverbank as children. Knowing that his brother was the better man, he never begrudged his betrothal to the woman he secretly loved. Now that Sathan has married another, Latimus becomes aware of Lila’s feelings. Determined to push her into the arms of a worthier man, he believes that a war-torn army commander such as he could never offer her the life she deserves.

As the war against the Deamons rages, Latimus fights for his people, protecting them from the evil Dark Lord Crimeous. When Lila suffers a brutal attack, Latimus is shaken to his core. Resolved to avenge her, he acknowledges the emotion that has always burned for her in his blackened heart. But Lila has moved on and, as the war ensues, he worries that it might be too late to claim her…

First Impressions

A common theme of this novel focused on how Lila and Latimus struggled to cope with the expectations for the lives they’ve been born into. Both were raised around a sense of duty. For her, it was an aristocratic one. She had a duty to her king, to her people, and an overarching duty to produce heirs for said king to continue ruling their subjects together. For him, it was a duty to lead and command his Vampyre army. Latimus has constantly led a hard life of danger and service, constantly seen as second best to his brother, the king. After the events of the last novel, and with the opening of this one, Lila and Latimus are both starting to realize they’ve had a mutual attraction to each other for centuries.

maxresdefault.jpg

You can’t help but question why they don’t take full advantage of their new situation in life, and tear each other’s clothes off!! After all, Lila is no longer betrothed to his brother, and she’s free to choose whoever she wants in life. However, when you’ve spent the last 1000 years living a certain life, and fulfilling a particular duty in that life, you can see why they’d both struggle to suddenly toss out everything they’ve been raised to believe about their purpose in life. Duty was always first and foremost to beat out love or emotion. Latimus in particular feels these countless years of killing has tainted him to the point where he’s not worthy of touching Lila considering how much blood he’s had on his hands. He constantly focuses on the bad, whereas she and everyone else can recognize the good in him.

Where You Left Your Heart

The Slowly Ticking Clock

Obviously seeing the romantic relationship develop between Latimus and Lila was a high point of the novel that makes your toes curl in delight with every scene. However, another one of the more fascinating observations with this read was the concept of time for our immortals. On the one hand, they feel like they have forever, so they convince themselves that some admissions of love or emotion can wait. In reality, they are still vulnerable to the ceaseless and unmerciful Deamon attacks which have been ramping up since the events of the first book.

DO9l7FrXcAA_aFu

At one point in the story we see a 1000 year-old vampyre killed in battle. As a human you can’t help but think, geez he had a good run! That was a long time for others to know and love him, and a long time to live as a soldier. Yet in the same vein you see how soul crushing the deaths of comrades can be. When you’re an immortal expecting to live forever, any moment of death is seen as too soon. This also plays out in the relationship between Lila and Latimus. After pushing aside their long-held grievances they finally have an immortal lifetime to spend together, and yet they still lament over how much time they’ve wasted these last 1000 years bickering with each other. It helps them realize that they don’t want to waste any more time, and make up for as much time as they can which was spent apart from each other.

Series: Etherya’s Earth, book 2. I am squirming in anticipation for book 3!!

Final Impressions: I am officially addicted to this series. The characters draw you in, and you find yourself holding your breath in anticipation wondering what troubles might befall them. At times Latimus and Lila are almost too overly supportive of each other, fawning over how amazing the other is whenever one says they deserve someone who isn’t flawed. This sequel does sort of lack the sense of urgency and momentum which was so prominent in book one. While the Deamon King, Crimeous, is still an active threat in this second book, the battle against him isn’t really the driving force of the plot. Instead, it’s really about Lila and Latimus learning to communicate their feelings for one another after keeping them secret for centuries. It was still an interesting tale to see their trust in each other and romance unfold, but also kind of lacking in the suspense department.

Smut Level: Daaaaamn! This sequel was 10 times steamier than book one. Plenty of dirty talk and passionate thrusting to really get your blood flowing.

Destiny’s Dark Light by Sara Dobie Bauer

What do you do when you finally meet the man destined to be your one true love, but he’s already in love with somebody else? Check out this witchy paranormal romance just in time for Halloween!

What’s it About?

51QejraqVdL

In modern day Charleston, two fated lovers meet at the beginning of a world-ending witch war…

Cyan Burroughs is a lonely light witch prophesied to battle the dreaded Dorcha—a dark sorcerer with the power to rule the world. There’s one problem: Cyan doesn’t have any powers of her own. An unknown witch flips a trolley and causes mass carnage, and Cyan’s dormant magic awakens. When she drags handsome Irishman Liam Cody from the wreckage, she recognizes his face from her aunt’s psychic portraits. He is the man Cyan is destined to love.

As she and her magical family seek to unveil the murderous witch who caused the accident, Cyan and Liam grow closer, but Liam’s mysterious past is not the only thing keeping them apart. Dark witches and light will soon fight to the death, and Cyan must face her calling. How can she protect Liam and win the war when her immense powers are barely under control?

First Impressions

I always say it takes a lot to surprise me, but this witchy read had me guessing pretty much from start to finish. We know that Cyan is the Loach of prophecy, a light witch destined to defeat evil so that good can prevail. Her enemy is referred to as Dorcha, a dark witch of immense power. Cyan’s destiny is not only to fight and defeat this Dorcha in a violent war of light against dark, but her one true love has also been foreseen by her seer of an aunt who’s been painting his portrait for as long as Cyan can remember. One day Cyan finally meets her one true love, but it’s in the midst of a terrible accident where they both struggle to pull his girlfriend from a burning car.

giphy (2)

Cyan has to watch on as the man who is her destiny pines after a woman he’s loved for years who is now in a coma. There are so many twists and turns in this novel that you never know what direction it might go. It’s clear the Dorcha has arrived, and caused the accident that finally brought Cyan and Liam together. But who is he? You’ll find yourself questioning everyone!! Sure, Liam might be Cyan’s true love, but does that mean they’ll necessarily get a happily ever after together? You want them to find love, but at the same time you find yourself heartbroken with his sense of hopelessness over his girlfriend’s injuries. As the war between good and evil approaches you never really know who is friend, who is foe, and who is one’s true love.

Building a Love Story

Ever since Cyan was a little girl, she’s known that she was destined to love one man, and she’s known what that man would look like. She comes from a family of light witches, and her aunt is a seer who has painted the image of this man many times whenever he’s appeared to her in a vision. When Cyan finally sees him in the flesh she’s absolutely floored. He might be in love with another woman, a woman he was planning to propose to, but Cyan can’t deny her love for this man.

rs_1024x759-170208085119-1024-vampire-diaries-ian-nina

Throughout the novel you’re constantly wondering how this romance might develop between Cyan and Liam seeing as his heart already belongs to someone else. Will Cyan really pursue a man who is grieving over his girlfriend in a coma? If something does happen between them, would it simply be a coping mechanism for Liam in an attempt to numb his pain as he watches his girlfriend slowly dying in front of him? And above it all, you can’t help but wonder if the draw that Cyan feels for Liam is truly love, or if it’s simply the fact she’s always been told this man would be the love of her life. Is she falling in love with the man, or the prophecy? Is it love, or her destiny? Is there even a difference between the two?

Series: Stand-alone. I want this to be a series!!

Final Impressions: This is an engaging, quick read that will keep you on your toes from start to finish. I wasn’t too far into the book before I found it harder and harder to put down. The characters draw you in just as much as the story itself. The whole book is sort of a slow build towards the ultimate battle between Loach and Dorcha, and while I definitely enjoyed the journey, the climax was almost over too quickly. We’re introduced to some new minor side characters towards the end, and the war is really just one battle. Maybe I’m greedy, but I would have loved an additional 50 pages to elaborate more on some of the dark witches who enter our tale late in the game, as well as the details and fallout of the war itself.

Smut Level: Our characters have new powers to deal with, not to mention a war to prepare for. Not exactly a lot of spare time for sexy fun times. I mean…there’s definitely some time. Just not a lot 😉

Sathan, King of the Vampyres, distraught at his sister’s disappearance and captivity, agrees to travel with Miranda to resect the Blade of Pestilence, also hoping to change his people’s state of endless war. Determined to fight their growing attraction, they forge a tentative truce. But old wounds run deep and trust is scarce. Their faith in each other must remain strong or all will be lost…

First Impressions

Wow, wow, this book pulled me in from opening bell and simply would not let go. When I first read the synopsis I thought, mkay a beautiful bad-ass female slayer falls for a sexy alpha male vampire. Let the Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel comparisons begin. Not that there’s anything wrong with that mind you, I was definitely looking forward to it! What I didn’t expect though was for the author to succeed in creating a unique world that manages to not only incorporate some of the paranormal elements we’re familiar with when it comes to blood-sucking entities, but even more than that to develop an enchanting mythology to provide a history for why Slayers and Vampyres have been pitted against each other for centuries. It’s an addictive read that is so much more than a battle between species. It involves putting aside long-held animosities, learning to trust enemies, standing up for what’s right, and sometimes questioning that which we always believed to be true.

Finding Peace…to go to War

Miranda, Princess of the Slayers, is fed up with the constant fighting plaguing her people, and she’s determined to finally bring peace to her land. Unfortunately for her, succeeding in this endeavor will require her to partner up with those who she’s been taught to hate her entire life. The dynamic between Miranda and Sathan, the Vampyre King, is definitely one of the highlights of this novel. I loved that they didn’t just throw away centuries of hatred after one lustful glance, but rather their road to trust, and eventually love, is a long and difficult one. It doesn’t happen overnight, and there are still moments of doubt which arise throughout which make us question if they’ll ever succeed in their quest for peace. Eventually they realize that they must rely on each other in order to achieve their common goal, and it’s only after they start to trust each other that they allow themselves to acknowledge the stirring of lust which has been humming just below the surface.

BTVS-3

Another aspect of the novel that I appreciated was the fact that their journey for peace is also a tumultuous one filled with twists and turns, as well as a slew of compelling characters who will capture your attention with the turn of every page. There are times where you never really know who you can trust, or if Miranda and Sathan will eventually come out on top in their desire to destroy a common enemy, the Deamon King. It’s in their arduous search for the ultimate weapon that Miranda and Sathan learn to put aside their differences, but this leads to yet another difficult task in convincing their people to do the same. We do reach a point in the middle of the book where things start to drag a little bit as Miranda and her army trains for the final battle against the Deamon King, and she also struggles to teach her people how to forgive their Vampyre enemy. However, at the same time this was an absolute necessity to demonstrate that the end of hatred isn’t easy or quick.

Series: Etherya’s Earth, book 1. I needed book 2 like, yesterday. This first novel lays the groundwork for each of the couples who will be featured in a future novel, and I honestly can’t say which one I’m looking forward to the most!

Final Impressions: This is a unique world that manages to turn some classic elements of Vampyres and Slayers on their head. It’s definitely not a predictable read, and presents us with some lovable characters, yet also some flawed ones who don’t always get a happily ever after. We’re presented with a delicious build of anticipation throughout the book, and while things culminate in a heart-stopping battle, the larger war is far from over. I’m excited to see how this theme might continue throughout the rest of the series!

Smut Level: The road for Miranda and Sathan to go from enemies to lovers is a complicated one, and while it takes some time before they eventually fall into bed together, we do get some mouthwatering teasing and flirting that will make you grin with delight. Once they do finally give into their desires, my goodness will it cause your toes to curl. They’re passionate, possessive, and not afraid to rough things up a bit.

Awakening by Kelley Heckart

Sexy actor with a Scottish lilt? Check. Secluded cabin? Check. Snowstorm? Yasssss!

What’s it About?

41OwfwfuHxL

Sometimes, the end is really the beginning. After destroying her successful music career, the close friendship with her bandmates, and her marriage, author Kaitlyn Storm, aka Kate Wolf, former bassist for the all-female rock band Hecate’s Fury, is given a second chance. She receives an offer to turn her book series into three movies, but her troubled rock-star past continues to haunt her. She never expected to find love or a way back. When she is trapped in a haunted cabin during a snowstorm with Kane Devlin, the hot Scottish movie star playing her hero, their rising passion for one another ignites. What they awakened will change their lives, but before she can move on, Kate must let go of the guilt and shame keeping her from claiming her shared destiny. For she may not know it yet, but she and her bandmates are chosen.

First Impressions

Kate is desperate to get her life back on track following the epic decline of her music career, and her failed relationship with her husband. She finally has that chance when her romance book series becomes a huge success, and she’s headed to a secluded cabin to begin working on the script with a team of writers, not to mention the sexy lead actor, Kane Devlin. Kate and Kane are the first to arrive at the cabin, and it’s not long before an intense blizzard traps the two of them before anyone else can arrive. I don’t know about you, but being trapped in a snowy cabin with a Scottish actor in front of a roaring fire with a cup of hot cocoa in hand sounds like a panty-melting party! Too bad they have a couple of party crashers in the form of two lovesick ghosts. One thing’s for sure though, Kane and Kate won’t let some spooky apparitions get in the way of their sexy time.

11

Setting the Mood

Kate and Kane are determined to help these ghosts resolve their unfinished business as quickly as possible, especially considering one of them in particular isn’t the nicest dead soul you’ve ever met. Rooms shake, furniture spins about, there are unexpected bursts of light, and one apparition goes so far as to possess Kane’s body. Kate is particularly determined to hunker down and do some research to discover the identities and untimely ends of these two ghosts. A task made exceedingly difficult considering the power outage caused by the snowstorm, resulting in a lack of internet and the default necessity of using old town newsletters as primary sources.

21a9bb122e562f4e89722c8e12016422

In spite of all this paranormal activity, Kane and Kate aren’t too distracted from exploring each other’s bodies as much as possible. Not gonna lie, it seems like they could have put their sexual attraction on hold for just a few days until they could escape from this haunted dwelling. They definitely have an intense connection drawing them together, but spooky ghosts kind of scream “mood killer” in my humble opinion. We’re not exactly dealing with warm and cuddly Patrick Swayze in Ghost here! While our apparitions don’t necessarily seem to want to cause our couple deathly harm…you never know when they might be sneakily observing some of Kate and Kane’s more amorous activities.

From Paranormal Activity to the Trials of Fame

Surprisingly, even though they lack an internet connection to speed along their research, it doesn’t take too long before Kate and Kane have uncovered the past history of our two ghosts. They even succeed in helping the one ghost find peace, and are well on their way to resolving the issues of the other ghost before the snowstorm eventually breaks, and the rest of the writing team arrives. Unfortunately, this is when things kind of fall flat for our plot in my opinion. After all, our paranormal issues are practically resolved at a third of a way through the book. What could possibly be left? As it turns out, some pretty typical Romancelandia relationship issues. Kane and Kate proceed to experience trust issues galore, from false rumors in the tabloids, to Kane’s jealousy over Kate continuing to work with her ex-husband.

ok_jpg.jpg

While they struggle to navigate the impact of Kane’s fame on their relationship, we almost struggle to remember that there’s still one final unresolved paranormal element for our second ghost simmering in the background. In a way, it felt like we had two different books which had been smashed together into one, and I’m not sure the various stories always meshed well into one cohesive plot. On the one hand we have a contemporary romance detailing the complications of dating someone famous. The other is a suspenseful paranormal tale of ghosts trying to move on in the afterlife. Perhaps there would have been a more balanced progression of events if the story had been told in reverse. We could have started out with Kane and Kate meeting, and after beginning a romance they experience issues of trust related to his fame and her past. They then go to a secluded cabin to be with each other in solitude, but shockingly encounter a couple of ghosts, and through their journey to help these ghosts move on they discover Kate’s supernatural abilities.

Shadow-Walkers

It’s not until the very end of the novel that we discover Kate and her former bandmates have supernatural abilities. She’s a shadow-walker, or someone who “can move safely between the realm of the living and that of the supernatural or shadow world”. By this point in the story, all of the major plot points involving Kate and Kane’s relationship, as well as our ghosts, have been resolved. This additional detail of Kate being a shadow-walker, and her bandmates also having special abilities, seemed like an afterthought that was just thrown on at the end of the story. I really wish it had received some more explanation and attention to highlight what this means for Kate, as well as Kane.

The-Dolls-live-2

*A copy of this book was provided for an honest review*

Series: Shadow-walkers, book 1. Consider me intrigued to give the next few books a try.

Final Impressions: This paranormal romance certainly started off with a spooky bang! The time when Kane and Kate were trapped in the snowy cabin with two ghostly apparitions was undoubtedly the highlight of the book. It’s not like they could just escape out into the snow storm to get away. Unfortunately, our lead couple is almost too adept in their role as ghost busters, and the most suspenseful and intriguing aspect of the story is over fairly quickly. The rest of the novel deals with Kane and Kate navigating the pitfalls of his fame with her previous decline as a female rock star, and we only get the briefest mentions here and there of their experiences in the cabin. Overall we needed fuller integration of the different plot lines, specifically the paranormal aspects and the hurdles of establishing their relationship due to their jobs and past loves.

Smut Level: A couple of ghosts don’t stand in the way of these two getting all sudsy in a bath tub. Kane is also happy to take some of the movie-set costumes back to his hotel room for some role-play and cheesy dialogue with Kate.

The Rogue King by Abigail Owen

This is the kind of book that will immediately make you crave the sequel as soon as you reach the last page.

What’s it About?

515zz9gE-qL

Kasia Amon is a master at hiding. Who—and what—she is makes her a mark for the entire supernatural world. Especially dragon shifters. To them, she’s treasure to be taken and claimed. A golden ticket to their highest throne. But she can’t stop bursting into flames, and there’s a sexy dragon shifter in town hunting for her…

As a rogue dragon, Brand Astarot has spent his life in the dark, shunned by his own kind, concealing his true identity. Only his dangerous reputation ensures his survival. Delivering a phoenix to the feared Blood King will bring him one step closer to the revenge he’s waited centuries to take. No way is he letting the feisty beauty get away.

But when Kasia sparks a white-hot need in him that’s impossible to ignore, Brand begins to form a new plan: claim her for himself…and take back his birthright.

First Impressions

I’ve been a huge fan of the Fire’s Edge series by Ms. Abigail Owen, and I’ve been craving more information about the dragon clan drama we’ve only heard hints of so far. When The Rogue King, which is the first book in the companion Inferno Rising series, landed in my lap I was positively tinkled pink. I’m happy to say this alternating series doesn’t disappoint, and has finally provided insight into the issues which have been playing on the edge of this dragon world up until now. What I love about any Abigail Owen book, and which certainly holds true in this premiere novel, is that there are so many layers at work to the plot beyond mere romance.

the-secret-circle-episode-12

You have Brand fighting to belong to a clan once again after going rogue hundreds of years before. His desire to earn the trust of his fellow dragons has the slightest hint of both desperation and exasperation to it, as he constantly struggles to become fully incorporated into this family/brotherhood. Then there’s the element of family legacy for both Kasia and Brand. She saw her mother die in front of her, and is now the phoenix of legend who can bring unbridled power to whichever dragon she eventually chooses to mate. Brand too witnessed the slaughter of his entire family, and now seeks to earn back his rightful place as king of the Gold Clan. There are battles for power and immortality, friendship, trust, loyalty, and on top of all that you have Brand and Kasia discovering their love for each other. That’s a full package right there!

Blind Faith

Even the developing romance between Brand and Kasia is a complicated one that contains multiple layers which go deeper than simple infatuation. He has been ordered to bring her back to mate his king, but his king isn’t merely his ruler. This is his one true friend in the world who took him in when no one else would. In the beginning Kasia was his mission, pure and simple. Yet the more time he spends protecting her, and getting close to her, the more Brand can’t deny his feelings for her are growing. However, to act on them would be the ultimate betrayal to the one man he’s considered a brother. The one man who might be able to aide him in his desire for revenge against his family’s killer. Can he really put all of that in jeopardy for a woman?

giphy (1)

As for Kasia, she’s been taught from an early age to run from dragons. Her existence as a phoenix will bring ultimate power and luck to the clan of her future dragon mate. In spite of this power, she’s never wanted to be a pawn in the chess game these dragons have waged for centuries against each other. Kasia is a strong female who is convinced she’s no damsel in distress who needs rescuing. Imagine her annoyance when she’s confronted by this alpha rogue dragon who insists on taking care of her. However, even Kasia has to admit when she’s in need of help, and she quickly realizes the need to place all her blind faith and trust in Brand. She’s willing to meet and possibly even mate his king to endure her own survival. Her growing infatuation for Brand is undeniable, yet she understands that by giving into this desire she might be putting both of their lives at risk. You just have to wonder how long they can both hold out for.

The Species At War

Dragons, wolves, demons, hell-hounds, vampires, and witches. Oh my! A fascinating feature of this novel is seeing the extent of infighting within the dragon species. They may all be the same in theory, but a key theme is seeing dragons fighting dragons from separate clans. They’re all after power, and they’re willing to take down members of their own species in the pursuit of it. However, we also see the introduction of all these different species which are supposed to be seen as the “other” compared to dragons. Wolves, vampires, etc, who are constantly viewed as a potential enemy. Their distrust of each other is immediate. Be that as it may, in the end we see how some of these different species have to come together in order to survive against a common enemy, and their alliance turns into one of trust and friendship. It’s a rather hopeful outlook that even those who seem so different on the surface might have more in common than they originally suspected.

Series: Inferno Rising, book 1. I’ve been waiting so long for the stories of the clan kings, and it’s finally here! I can’t wait to see what comes next, and how these two series will continue to intertwine.

Final Impressions: Some fantastical aspects of the conclusion were a bit over the top for me, and we are ultimately left with some questions unanswered so that they can inevitably be resolved in a future book. This definitely helps to build the drama, but every now and again there were a few too many things going on at once. However, I loved that this also resulted in the plot constantly keeping you on your toes. It definitely was not a predictable read! You never know what’s going to happen next, what new characters we might meet, and what new alliances may be created or broken.

Smut Level: As if this dragon and phoenix weren’t putting out enough fire and flames of their own!! When Kasia and Brand come together they practically set the roof on fire!

The Rookie by Abigail Owen

Aidan has convinced himself that he’s not worthy of ever finding a mate. And yet the need he feels for Sera is undeniable. When he discovers she carries the sign of being a dragon mate, he starts to hope that Sera could be his.

What’s it About?

51bxBeuUZNL._SY346_

To escape exile, Aidan Paytah has had to prove himself worthy. Every second of every damn day. He fought with everything he had to earn his precarious place on the Huracán team of dragon shifter enforcers. He can’t fail or afford distractions, no matter how temptingly sweet. Total loyalty to the clans and dedication to his team is the only way.

Sera Morrison lost her parents and her husband in short order, leaving her a single mother running her family winery alone. Nothing could ever have prepared her for the discovery that she’s a destined dragon mate. But once she finds out, there’s only one man she wants—the one who walks away.

However, the Alliance Council has its own agenda. They want to use her as a political pawn and force a mating that could ultimately kill her to save the High King. Aidan has no choice but to kidnap her, even if it means their close proximity reinforces their own mating bond. And mating with him could end up being a far worse fate for Sera….

First Impressions

It’s pretty clear to us readers that Sera isn’t just your average widow looking to protect her young son, Blake. She’s a dragon mate, and her mate is Aidan. Bada boom bada bing. No mystery there. That being said, it’s still a fun ride to see the process of Sera and the rest of the Huracán enforcers discover the truth of what she really is. Something I really appreciated about this book was that it added some surprise elements which truly distinguished it from the previous two novels in the series. We aren’t just dealing with another woman who discovers she has a significant role to play within the world of dragons.

Capture

The sign of being a dragon mate is that the brand of the dragon clan the mate is destined for suddenly appears on the woman’s neck. The fact that Sera has not just one dragon clan brand on her neck, but three, throws everyone for a loop! What could it mean? Could she pick and choose anyone from among those three clans? Could she possibly have three mates instead of one? Not to mention we all question what her sign as a dragon mate might mean for her young son, who is a mere mortal. The truly brilliant aspect of this novel though was that we didn’t just see these events carry out from Sera and Aidan’s perspectives. There’s a third villainous character whose identity remains a mystery, but he’s convinced that Sera is meant for him. She appears to him in his mind, and he’ll do anything to have her as his mate in real life. The added problem is that we learn he’s one of Aidan’s fellow dragon shifter enforcers. Duh duh duhhhhh.

giphy (1)

The Risk of Mating

Sera has always been wary of the connections she’s felt to Aidan, which is stronger than any she’s ever felt before. Even when compared with her late husband, and the father of her son. However, she and Aidan have an undeniable chemistry, and when she’s told that one of the dragon brands on her neck is the blue color of Aidan’s clan, she starts to wonder if they’ve been destined to end up together all along. The fellow enforcers inform her that she’ll feel the link with her one true mate in her gut, and her thought immediately goes to Aidan. The fact that he’s always treated her son Blake as a treasure rather than a nuisance makes her realize the importance of her mate accepting her and her son as a package deal. And yet, there’s still a sense of doubt.

pair-1362858__340

She’s fully aware of the dangers of what could happen if Aidan isn’t her mate, and the two attempt to come together. She’ll burst into flames, die a painful death, and Aidan would be able to do nothing but watch on as she turns to Ash in his arms. Not the prettiest picture here! When Sera realizes the distinct possibility of death should she choose the wrong mate, she really doesn’t express any immediate concern over her own life. Instead she immediately thinks of Aidan. The pain it would cause him to watch her die in his arms, and the loss of half his soul should it turn out that they aren’t actually mates. She worries about how he’d survive after something like that. Who would comfort him? The fact she was more concerned with his well being rather than her own demonstrates how truly selfless she is. She can’t help but notice though that Aidan doesn’t seem too excited at the thought of seeing his clan’s blue color on the back of her neck.

Will-The-White-Walker-Dragon-Spit-Ice-or-Fire_

From Dreams to Reality

As for Aidan, you’d think that the frequency of sex dreams he’s had recently featuring Sera would have been a sure indicator to him that this human was his mate. However, he just assumes she’s the star of his wet dreams because of his physical desire for her. He never allowed himself to hope that it signified she belonged to him. After all, he’s an orphan. A nobody. He’s had to fight his way up to become an enforcer and earn the trust of his teammates. The death of his parents when he was a youngster turned him into an outsider within his former community. Never in his wildest dreams, even though they featured Sera, did he every think he’d be worthy to be selected as someone’s mate. That must be an honor reserved for those who are leaders in their community. Especially when he discovers that one of the three clan brands she carries on her neck belongs to the High King who is near death for lack of a mate. Surely an outcast orphan like himself could never stand a chance compared to the king of kings.

underworld-viktor

A Broken System

The broken system of the mating process really comes to the forefront in this book. It was hinted at previously in books one and two, but really wasn’t as much of a focus as we see here. We’re starting to understand a bit more regarding the inner workings of this world, and the political aspirations of the Alliance Council which brings possible dragon mates together for the official mating process. In addition, we see how the sheer desperation of these male dragons to find a mate is so strong that it even has the ability to pit teammates again each other. This Huracán team consists of dragon shifters that have fought and flown together for years. They are brothers in every sense of the word. And yet, when Sera appears with the brands of three different dragon clans on the back of her neck, each team member of the relevant clan is overcome with an intense feeling of jealousy and possession over the right to mate with her.

google-angry-dragon-for-a-good-time_o_6760059.jpg

They’re desperate to finally feel that pure emotional and physical connection with another, and the fact it stops them from aging is an added bonus. We can understand how this desperation which has been built into their society could impact one’s ability to determine if someone was actually their true mate, or if their hope at finding her would turn into an unhealthy desire to mate with anyone who might give them that link. The repercussions of mating with someone who isn’t your true mate brings disastrous and traumatic consequences to the extreme. Seeing someone you were convinced was your one true mate burn to ash in agonizing pain in front of you. To live through that, and then be presented with the possibility of another mate? It’s clear how that might make someone go crazy with need.

The Hidden Villain

This brings us to our “villain”. I must say the constant hinting as to the hidden identity of this person was brilliant!! We don’t know who it might be, but then we see the list of possibilities narrowed down to being just one of the other two men whose brand she wears on her neck. While we see things from his point of view, and hear his delusional inner musings about how Sera must be his destined mate, his identity is kept a secret until the very end of the book. Just when you think that maybe a chapter or scene will end with a big reveal of who is thinking these thoughts, we switch to focus on something else. It ramps up the suspense to an amazing level!

reading

I was constantly switching back and forth from thinking it was one dragon, and then in the next scene you start to wonder if it might be the other one. Talk about suspicion whiplash!!! Throughout so much of the book we see this “villain” as someone who has lost grip with reality. You want Aidan and Sera to figure out who it is, and for them to succeed in realizing that they are destined mates. But by the end you see how easy it could be in this world to be overcome with the hope of finding a mate that you could go slightly crazy in the search for it. That desire ultimately pitted this man against his brothers, and it was such a heart breaking realization for him to make in the heat of battle. It’s eventually a surprisingly emotional and touching reveal, I definitely had tears in my eyes.

Series: Fire’s Edge, book 3. Why isn’t book 4 in my hands right now? I have a feeling the next one is going to be an emotional roller coaster from start to finish.

Final Impressions: I really appreciated the fact that this book started to tear away at the intrigue and political deviousness of the Alliance Council. It’s something that’s been hinted at and touched upon quite briefly in the previous books, which were much more focused on the process of a dragon finding his human mate, the shifting process, etc. We also finally uncover the identity of the spy within this group of enforcers. In spite of all the espionage and political discussions at play here, I was shocked at how emotional of a read this book ended up being. I was NOT expecting that at all, and it knocked my socks off.

Smut Level: It might take a while for Sera and Aidan to come together in the waking world, but these two engage in some dream sex that is guaranteed to set the sheets on fire!

Escaping Mortality by Sara Dobie Bauer

Witness the exciting conclusion to the Escape Trilogy! Will vampire Andrew and his beloved sailor love each other for all eternity? Or will a vampire Elder come between them?

What’s it About?

43206768

Their ocean journey was successful, and Andrew and Edmund found an Elder just in time. As they wished, Edmund is now a vampire like Andrew. They have eternity together, but first, they must visit Edmund’s ailing mother in the English countryside with their flock of immortals, including the Elder, who has taken an ominous liking to his new creation.

When they arrive at Edmund’s family estate, his sick mother and her loathsome best friend await them. While ducking religious curses, Edmund struggles to harness an unexpected power gifted him by the Elder. Andrew fears for his beloved as Edmund becomes more and more monstrous—but vampires have always been monsters, haven’t they?

A battle is coming, for Edmund’s heart and his soul, and Andrew will lose neither. He escaped island exile and a near tragedy at sea to be with Edmund, the beautiful young sailor he loves. Andrew will do anything to keep Edmund by his side, but his most dangerous adversary may be Edmund himself.

First Impressions

Book three in the Escape Trilogy picks up right where book two left off, with Andrew and Edmund locating a vampire Elder in the hopes that he’ll be able to turn Edmund into an immortal before he succumbs to illness. Mini spoiler alert (although not really a spoiler considering it’s in the synopsis), the two are successful! We’ve been wondering for the entire series whether or not Edmund would ever turn into a vampire like Andrew, and at long last our question is answered. Enter Brien, an ancient vampire who manages to save Edmund’s life…by taking it from him. Following his transformation, Edmund acquires some vampiric abilities that I’m sure we’re all used to at this point. Immense strength, blood lust, a pair of fangs that like to descend with little warning. You know, the usual. And yet we slowly discover that Brien has passed on some additional abilities to Edmund which make him unlike his fellow vampire friends and lover. Will his new abilities, not to mention this new connection with Brien, draw a wedge between him and Andrew?

trueblood-710-bill

A Journey to the Past

Edmund doesn’t have too much time to get used to his new abilities as a vampire, as he and Andrew must make a quick dash to England to meet with Edmund’s sickly mother before she passes away. You can’t help but appreciate the irony of seeing Edmund return to his birthplace immediately following his rebirth as a vampire. We’ve seen Andrew and Edmund confront such stark differences in terms of society and locations throughout this entire series. In book one we saw them connect on a deserted island in the middle of the ocean. In the sequel they immersed themselves in the fast paced and sin-filled city of New Orleans. And then in this final piece of the trilogy we explore an entirely different locale by visiting the uppity upper class of English society, and the slow-paced ennui of the countryside. With each change in setting we wonder if Edmund and Andrew will make it through the transition and changes of a different world, especially in this instance when we see Edmund confront his past.

53da69576dec627b149e8982_belton-house-copyright-national-trust-images-andrew-butler.jpg

He’s trying to find some semblance of peace with his mother before she passes, and reconcile their differences upon his departure all those years ago, not to mention the particulars of his love-life. She’s gone mad in his absence, which he can’t help but feel slightly guilty for. It’s rather shocking to see how our quick-witted and flirtatious Edmund collapse into himself upon going back to his childhood home. It forces him to confront the pains of his past, as well as the changes which have occurred in his absence. He practically becomes a quiet shell of his former self, and it was such a fascinating, yet heartbreaking transition. In these broken moments we have to wonder who will succeed in pulling Edmund out of his melancholy. Will it be Andrew, the man who has vowed to love him throughout all eternity? Or will it be Brien, the new mysterious Elder who gave him the gift of immortality?

d96bbf5e3e9cd45965f2bbef4fd86949.png

An Elder of Mystery

Ohhh Brien the Elder. His entire being is steeped in mystery. We are all immediately intrigued by his quiet presence, especially considering he remains primarily in the background of the novel as an observer of Edmund and Andrew’s relationship. The whole time we are sort of wondering what his game is, as does Andrew. Brien is clearly infatuated with Edmund, and the two have a strong bond as creator and…child? But there’s also an attraction there. Will Brien come to share a bed with both Edmund and Andrew? After all, they’ve been known to share lovers in the past, but with their newfound commitment to monogamy it also seems out of the question.

DmNr.gif

Or are his motives perhaps more underhanded? At one point, Edmund astutely points out that Brien is the most powerful creature in existence. If he wanted, he could probably rule completely over both man and supernatural beings. And yet he’s choosing to stick around with Edmund and Andrew’s friends as they traverse the English countryside. What’s he really plotting as he silently observes the group’s activities? While I was definitely drawn to the enigma that was Brien, I was also slightly disappointed that we didn’t get more from him. It’s easy to forget about him at times considering his quiet nature, and it really isn’t until the very final climax of the novel that some of our questions are answered about him. And even then, I felt like I still had more questions than answers about our mysterious Elder.

ff79c1c16f596084ca938cbcbdaeddd9--beautiful-men-beautiful-people

One and Only

In books one and two we saw Andrew and Edmund declare their undying love for each other, and they vowed that it would last forever. That’s all well and good when they knew that Edmund’s time on this Earth was limited, but what happens now that he is an immortal just like Andrew? You have to question if monogamy is really a possibility when it’s for eternity, and yet what I absolutely adored from our couple is that it’s really never a question for them. Their connection and bond is so strong they never doubt the reality that they’ll remain devoted to each other forever. Through all the difficulties and trials that Edmund faces in his transition, as well as with confronting his past life in London, Andrew remains the one calming presence in his life. And yet, he also has an undeniable connection with Brien, his creator. Brien did take his soul after all. And this is a connection which creates an almost inconsolable type of jealousy with Andrew. True, Andrew holds Edmund’s heart, but can he compete with someone who holds the soul of his beloved?

Unleashing the Beast

While the connection between Edmund and Andrew has been a delight throughout this entire series, I will say there was one disturbing scene presented in this novel that I could have done without. Upon returning to his homestead to discover the unhealthy mental state of his mother, Edmund goes out on a solo drinking binge. He returns to Andrew looking for a fight, spurring him on in an attempt to draw out the dark beast hiding within Andrew. Unfortunately, he pushes a bit too hard where the beast takes control, smacking Edmund around and attempting to rape him. Only through Edmund’s new powers as a vampire is he able to fight off Andrew and bring him back to his senses. Andrew is understandably horrified at his behavior, but it was just pretty disturbing to see him lose control to the point where he was about to take Edmund against his will. Eventually they are able to move past it and forgive each other for their erratic behavior, but it wasn’t my favorite scene. Edmund and Andrew have been so loving and caring of each other since their island exile that it seemed out of character for them to behave in such a manner.

Series: The Escape Trilogy, book 3. So sad to see this series come to an end! I’m keeping my fingers crossed we get some kind of spin-off involving the other vampires in Edmund and Andrew’s world.

Final Impressions: I love this couple. There, I said it! It’s been such a tumultuous journey we’ve traversed with them since book one, and we clearly saw the strength of their physical connection in book two. This final chapter highlights the emotional bond between the two, and it’s one that we know has the ability to last for all eternity. If I had to find one fault with the close to the trilogy, it would be that Brien the Elder should have been featured just a bit more prominently throughout the book. I understand that this is meant to be Edmund and Andrew’s story, and that we don’t want to stray too far from that considering it’s what makes the series so special. However, an additional scene or two involving Brien’s interactions with our lead couple could have provided more of a glimpse into who this character is.

Smut Level: Edmund and Andrew have always been a passionate couple, and this theme definitely carries over into our conclusion. That being said, considering how Edmund is going through a bit of an identity crisis as a new vampire, as well as with confronting his past, the two don’t spend as much time in the bedroom as they did in book two.
