Fire & Brimstone by R.L. Mathewson

I have heard many a different insult thrown around in the heat of an argument. And in a variety of languages for that matter. However, I must say this novel may have presented the harshest of insults I’ve ever seen: Bieber lover. Burrrrrrn.

What’s it About?

26158415

What happens when a Bradford with questionable OCD, a tempter and a reputation for making his employees cry falls for the woman that refuses to accept the fact that he’s fired her and was terrifyingly more of a Bradford than he was? Well, we can’t share that here, because it would be seriously inappropriate, but we’re sure that you can see where this is leading…To the altar or a stint in the slammer, either one is possible when it comes to the Neighbor from Hell Series.

Author’s Note: This book along with the rest of the series is intended to make you smile, let you relax and forget the drama and stress that plagues our lives even if its just for a little while. This is a drama free book. My goal is to put a smile on your face and I hope this book does that.

First Impressions

This is another fun continuation of the Neighbor from Hell series. If you’re looking for a cute read that will put a smile on your face, yet also sexy enough to put a blush on your cheeks, I simply can’t recommend it enough. Each book presents a hilarious love-hate relationship between neighbors, and this book was no exception. Rebecca and Lucifer have been working together at his restaurant for years, but he’s also been trying to fire her for that same amount of time. Rebecca’s response is to usually just grin and go on with her day. It was simply a matter of time before he snapped and…took her in the front seat of his car.

Gluttony is the Name of the Game

When it comes to this series, you can be guaranteed that the characters will do most everything to excess. I mean, cheese…and…rice! I don’t know if it’s physically possible to ingest as much food as these people do in one sitting, and still look as amazingly hot as they do with six-pack abs, but it seems like something worth looking into. I feel like in most of these novels the dietary excesses are limited to the Bradford clan only, but in this book it appears to be an expanding phenomenon to other characters. From Rebecca’s roommate, Melanie, who can apparently eat Hostess baked goods one after the other, to even Rebecca herself. Let’s just say I never thought I’d come across someone who drinks more Coca-Cola than my sister (that’s saying something). Rebecca also has no problem eating from a 5 lb bag of Hershey’s kisses like it’s popcorn.

Knee-Slapping Fun

Something else that I sort of felt was done to excess in this novel was the comedy. It seemed a bit too forced and over the top at certain points. This is a sarcastic bunch of characters here. We’ve been introduced to so many different Bradfords over the years through this series, and while it was fun to see them all make an appearance in this book, all their shenanigans and personalities were somewhat over-the-top when all in one novel. Still a delightfully fun and light-hearted read when you’re looking to take a break from all the drama in your life.

Series: Neighbor From Hell, book 8. You couldn’t keep me away from this series if you tried! And why would you?! I will say, it seems like every synopsis mentions how one character risks jail time because they hate the other so much, and might do something drastic. Not asking for physical harm or anything, but I’d kind of love to see someone actually spend like, a night in jail over their antics.

Should you read it? Fun to see some of the same recognizable themes in this series, from hungry lead characters to the fact that “Bradfords don’t propose”, they kidnap to marry their significant other. We still have unique characters though. In this case an OCD male lead, and a sassy female who finds horror movies relaxing. I do wish they could have connected on a more serious and emotional level rather than constant sarcastic shenanigans. Overall though, a fun read with some great dirty talk!

Smut Level: Probably the only romance I’ve read with a snarky argument and verbal sparring match between a couple as they 69 each other. There’s a first for everything!!

Christmas From Hell by R.L. Mathewson

xmas-from-hell

When the power goes out in the midst of a snow storm, and you’re trapped in a house with your sexy neighbor, there’s one sure-fire way to stay warm!

What’s it About?

Duncan Bradford is used to putting other people first even the annoying little jinx that lives next door, but when the unexpected happens and he starts to see her in a whole new light, he decides that it’s time that he acts more like a Bradford and takes what he wants.

First Impressions

The neighbor series is back y’all, and with all the silliness and sexiness of the first few books. I’ve been a huge fan of this series for quite some time now, but the last book took on a bit of a serious note. In this novel however, we are once again privy to a feel-good story that will make you laugh, yet also blush from some steamy scenes between a clumsy female lead, and a sexy Bradford with quite the appetite. For both food and the horizontal mambo!

The Dance of the Neighbors!

This couple has got some pretty big shoes to fill when compared to all of the lovable characters who have come before them in this series. I’m happy to say that they don’t disappoint! Duncan is a fireman, so that’s automatically a plus in my book. As for Necie, she’s a talented baker, which seems like a rather dangerous profession when you live next door to a Bradford.

ck-blog-12-25-2

Shockingly enough, Duncan wants nothing to do with his beautiful neighbor, as she is perhaps the biggest jinx alive, and unfortunately her ill-timed klutzy mishaps often result in Duncan getting injured. Although these mishaps are pretty outlandish, and at times rather repetitive, you can’t help but let out a laugh when they happen. You’ll also feel as though they are fate’s way of ensuring the two are brought together whether they like it or not.

‘Tis the Season for Sexy Times

Duncan and Necie definitely know how to ignite a fire between the sheets. Her grandfather might keep his many guns polished and at the ready in order to keep the dashing Bradford out of his granddaughter’s bed, but even he can’t prevent these two from coming together in a tangle of limbs.

Funnily enough, a large portion of the overly sexual scenes presented in this book don’t actually happen, but rather are Duncan’s own thoughts on what he’d love to do with the gorgeous jinx living next door. Don’t be disappointed though! He carries out plenty of those desires in reality, and me oh my does that man have a dirty mouth. But hey, Necie doesn’t seem to mind!

Series: Neighbor from Hell, book 7. I can’t wait to read the next book, as our tales of Bradfords continue!

Should you read it? A light-hearted read filled with lovable characters who are guaranteed to make you chuckle, especially Necie’s sweet yet threatening grandfather. And of course, any Neighbor from Hell book would not be complete without a good ole fashion Bradford kidnapping of his one true love. I do wish there had been a bit more tie in with Christmas though beyond just snow and a chapter-by-chapter countdown to Christmas.

Smut Level: When Duncan kidnaps Necie away to a romantic mountain cabin to “get to know each other”, well let’s just say they get to know just about every inch of each other. And get rather sore in the process!

Double Dare by R.L. Mathewson

Goodness gracious golly monkeys how I love this series. For all of you out there who are contemplating giving the romance genre a try, I would recommend starting with the Neighbor From Hell series. Each one is funny, sexy, and has a male lead that I want to lock myself away with in a bedroom for at least 2 days.

What’s it About? double dare

Marybeth still couldn’t believe that she’d survived this long with a friend like Darrin, but somehow she’d managed to beat the odds and not give in to temptation and smother him with a pillow while he slept. Of course some days were more difficult than others…For twenty years he’s been biding his time, waiting for the right moment to make his move and now that it was here…He couldn’t seem to stop screwing up.

First Impressions

For a Neighbor From Hell book, this one definitely breaks the mold when compared to the other books in the series. Firstly, although it definitely has its funny moments which will make you laugh out loud, it’s probably the novel which has dealt with the most serious subject matter so far. Marybeth is unable to have children, and rather than have Darrin look at her as less of a woman, she tells him that she simply doesn’t want children.

Another big difference was in the progression of their relationship, in that they didn’t really have that initial phase of annoyance and hatred which was present in every other book. Instead, they were best friends since childhood. They still certainly had their moments where they pushed each others buttons, especially when it came to double daring each other to do crazy things. I must say though, I was shocked that throughout the entire book we were never witness to a triple dog dare.

triple dog dareNot So Secret After All

Marybeth and Darrin have been best friends forever, but for the last 6 years they’ve been keeping their romantic relationship “secret” from their family. That being said, they haven’t done a very good job at the whole “keeping it a secret” plan considering that practically everyone has walked in on them doing the vertical mambo up against a wall. Marybeth has been hesitant to make their relationship known because deep down she feels Darrin deserves someone better; someone who can actually give him children. Poor chica.

Overall I really enjoyed the story line, and their double dares provided several scenes of hilarity. However, I was rather disappointed that we never got to see that moment when they transition from being friends to lovers. That is always my favorite part of any romance novel between friends! I was cheated out of my moment! The prologue does offer a brief glimpse of the progression from friendship to something more, but basically they were friends in one scene, and then they flash forward a few years to Darrin rubbing up on Marybeth’s behind in bed. Oh my!

man-kissing-woman-on-the-neck-pfSeries: Neighbor From Hell, book 6. The next one comes out in 2016! Is it 2016 yet?

Should you read it? You should read the rest of the series first, mainly because each book is a hoot, but also because you meet a lot of the characters from the previous novels in this one. It was sad to read about how Marybeth thought she was less of a woman because she couldn’t have children, but you’ve gotta love how Darrin tries to prove that she’s still all woman.

Smut Level: At one point there is a bet between the two over who can hold out the longest from having sex. If he wins, they get married. If she wins, he’ll never mention marriage again. This bet may have prevented them from actually having sex for a while, but there are some hilarious scenes of teasing and a tortured denial of gratification.

The Game Plan by R.L. Mathewson

This series is like crack! Ok, so I’ve never done crack. Maybe Coca-Cola or chocolate would be a better addictive product to reference. This series is definitely addictive though, to the point where you crave it when you don’t have it. Hell, I remember being excited whenever I failed to sleep-in on the weekends, because it meant I could indulge in this particular addiction.

What’s it About?

the game plan

Spend the next 40 years in prison or break her lease early? Normally she’d be able to say that this one was a no-brainer, but things have definitely changed since she was forced to move in across the hall from Danny Bradford. A lot of things… She wanted to get through one day, just ONE day without Danny Bradford doing something to test the limits to her control, but with that damn smile of his and his habit of leaving her contemplating manslaughter, she didn’t see that happening anytime soon. He loved his family, but some days… It was too much, but that was okay, because his small neighbor living across the hallway provided him with endless hours of entertainment. Not on purpose of course, but did it really matter as long she made him smile?

First Impressions

Just like any other Bradford, Danny has a strong appetite for two things: food and sex. This family’s propensity for food is so outrageous, yet unbelievably hilarious I can’t help but laugh out loud sometimes when I read it. In addition to a questionable food addiction, it seems the Bradford men also share a talent for fluency in dirty talk, and are quite adept at other sexual activities. They also have some interesting theories when it comes to love and marriage. For example, Bradford men simply don’t propose to the women they love. Oh no. You’re supposed to kidnap your intended bride. Although the men throughout these novels share some similar traits in regards to their inability to fill up on food, and their amazing sexual prowess, each book is different, and this novel in particular had some unique aspects.

shoulder

An Added Hilarity

I always laughed at the Bradford food obsession and general shenanigans between neighbors in the previous novels, but The Game Plan offered another point of hilarity in Jodi’s unfortunate response to medication. This girl spent about 1/2 of the book high on meds with terrible reactions including becoming extra touchy feely, and the inability to keep her horny thoughts to herself. Or her clothes on for that matter. Jodi’s strange reactions to any kind of pain or allergy medication was pretty ridiculous, and quite unrealistic, but that didn’t stop me from giggling to myself. On second thought, this book probably should have been called The Game Plans (plural), as so many of Danny’s plans for seduction were ruined because of Jodi’s strange reactions to medication.

A Different Relationship

Although Danny and Jodi agreed to date a lot quicker than the couples in the previous novels, there is a much bigger and longer build-up to the point when they actually have sex. For some unexplicable reason, Danny and Jodi decide to take things slow, and don’t have sex until very late in the game. Now, this doesn’t mean the novel is dull in any way, shape, or form. Let’s just say they get extremely creative with some jelly donuts, showering in general, and there is a decent amount of rubbing involved.

jelly

The other books in this series also offered a glimpse of the other family members in the Bradford clan, but the family presence played a much bigger role in this one. The strained realtionship between Danny and his father is of particular importance to the plot, and everything comes to a head in a family vacation to Disneyworld. Not necessarily the happiest place on earth when the Bradfords are on the scene. It might be the sexiest place though when you think of the total number of abs these Bradford men have. Mmmm, nice.

abs 2abs 3abs

Series: Neighbor From Hell series, book 5. This is one of my favorite romance series out there. They’re funny, and they’re HOT!

Should you read it? Uh, yeah! Technically, every book in this series is a stand-alone, but because you meet a large number of characters from the previous books on the family vacation to Florida, I would recommend you read them all in order.

Smut Level: Jelly donuts people. Jelly freakin’ donuts. Also, just look at the cover!
